Got trapped in the elevator at an office building where I’d recently taken a position.
Picked up the red phone and said “help, the elevator isn’t moving, and I’m stuck inside”
Lady said “what is your location?” I said “in the elevator. The elevator is at the bottom floor in the lobby of the building. It’s right across from the guard desk, you can see me”
Lady said “I’m sorry sir I’m located in Missouri (5 states away), what building are you in?”
“I’m in the Regionsbank building.”
“What is the address of that building?” Me… fucked if I know. It’s the building where I go to work. “I’m in the Regionsbank building. My office sits directly under the ‘R’. I don’t know the address, I don’t receive mail or package parcels there, this isn’t 1890, look it up on Google.”
So I start banging on the door and there’s no response. About 45 minutes later they finally let me out and they’re all angry like, “why were you banging? Couldn’t you hear we were out here trying to open the elevator” and I’m like no, I heard nothing at all, I’m so terribly sorry if I inconvenienced you by being trapped in your goddamn elevator and getting noisy about it.
Glad I work from home now. Anything I get stuck in is my own fault, and I can just smash it with a chair if need be.
The sign on the door says “NO SPRING CHICKENS.”
We had a couple months back an employee working 3rd shift go to a chemical storage room to retrieve some supplies and managed to lock himself in. After pounding on the door for about an hour to no avail (skeleton crew at 2am) he decided his best way out would be to pull the fire alarm thinking security would check into the pulled alarm and let him out.
Nope. Pulling the alarm not only called the fire department to respond, it also activated a CO2 fire suppression system in the room displacing the oxygen. Firemen found him passed out on the floor.
He survived and our EHS department ended up with a big fat CAPA.
And a CAPA is what exactly?
Corrective and Preventive Action.
Not an unreasonable assumption. Too bad it could have killed him!
Either way, it becomes Someone Else’s Problem.
Whenever I think about a home elevator - getting stuck haunts me. Imagine being in a home single person elevator and the power goes out. Just a little box. Yeah, I figure they have battery backup and stuff but still…
Update: The little red box that was supposed to talk to me and send me a rescue team never picked up because they have caller ID and we didn’t provide the necessary details to them, so when I called call blocking software stopped them from answering, sending me straight to a busy signal. Supposedly fixed now.
