When you get into bed, do you close your eyes right away?

I was watching a TV show last night, and a character got ready for bed, slipped under the covers, and immediately turned off the light and closed her eyes. Except for times when I’m very drunk, I never close my eyes right away: I always either read or watch some TV in bed before falling asleep, and usually it’s a little of both.

So I started wondering: do any of you get into bed and close your eyes right away? (Assuming that you’re alone in the bed, of course. ;))

NEVER. There are very few times in my adult life that I have gone to bed without reading. Otherwise, I’m watching TV or a movie. If my SO has gone to sleep before me, I"ll read in the living room until I’m almost asleep, then go back to the bedroom.

Nope. I read for ten or fifteen minutes. Unless I’ve had fifty-three beers, and then my eyes are closed before I get in bed.

I never used to, but I do now. Could be an age thing, or it could be because I decided to adopt the habit of never going to bed unless I was tired. Of course I get tired easier now, too.

I take them out and put them in a jar.

Yes. I might read before bed but I can’t stand reading in bed.

I usually read before bed, even if I’m very tired (if I don’t, I dream about work, which is no fun – if I read, I’ll dream about what’s in my book). But, once in a while, I will be so tired before bed that my brain will warn my body, “You have fifteen minutes left.” *

I know my brain means business, so I’ll go straight to bed. In that case, I will close my eyes right away. But most of the time, no, I don’t do the sitcom character going-to-bed thing.

*Once, I was out in a bar with friends when this happened. I did make it home, but never made it under the covers. I woke up the next morning grateful I had at least managed to get my keys out of the lock before I collapsed.

I watch TV for a while first, sometimes only 10 minutes but I always turn the set on and flip through the channels.

Most of the time I don’t go to bed until I’m truly worn out, so I do pretty much fall asleep right away. I suppose people who are better at keeping a regular bedtime than I am probably are more likely to spend some time idling before they actually fall asleep though.

I close my eyes as soon as I turn out the light and I’m asleep in just a few seconds. I sleep so soundly that I’ve slept through an earthquake and the smoke alarm going off. The phone on my nightstand ringing also doesn’t wake me.

I love my bed, my comfy, cozy, downy comforter, the cool air from the open window…Zzzzzzzz

I read a little out in the living room before I go to bed, if I’m having a good day. Then, when I do go to bed, I’m ready, I get under the covers and close my eyes. Whether I sleep or not is another matter. However, since I’ve always had some trouble getting to sleep at night, I’ve been told (and I live by) that the bed should only be used for sleep and sex. So no reading in bed for me, and there is no television in the bedroom.

Wow, it seems like you could write a sitcom around that.

Dion’t be ridiculous – you have to read before you go to sleep.

Yup, always read before turning out the light. If it’s really late, and I’m really tired, it might be a page or two of a magazine – but sometimes when I’m tired and have had a shitty day, I’ll go to bed early so I can read for an hour or more. Ah, bliss.

If I read before I go to sleep, it’s in a different room. I’m with Anastaseon on this one. The bed is for sleeping and sex only. So yeah, my eyes are closed as soon as I crawl under the covers.

Of course, now it’s for sleeping only in my case, but that’s another story.

Hubby is the in-bed reader, not me. But we always chat and snuggle for at least a few minutes before falling asleep, unless we were up really really late and are just ready to crash out.

So, no.
