I dimly remember stuff about X-bar syntax and Generalised Phrase Structure Grammar … it was a while back, now. Some of it stuck.
The phonetics, now, I remember a lot more of. Particularly the experimental phonetics unit I took in my third year. In fact, the sight of the interior of the nasal cavity during speech production may well haunt me to my grave …
I did a BA/MA in Cognitive Psych. at Boulder, with Linguistics as the secondary part of the undergraduate portion. It was tempting to try for a minor or double major, but I couldn’t fit the courses into my schedule. I really enjoyed the linguistic classes I took and try to keep up with linguistics, I need to start using my parents’ library access to read journal articles once more.
Another linguist, checking in. I’ve posted in a few of the linguistic threads before, though not in a while.
Aside from phrases like “X-Bar Theory”, “Governmental Binding”, and “anaphors”, I don’t remember too much of Syntax. Chomsky came up, but we didn’t read anything by him. I always preferred Phonology and Morphology, personally.
I took my linguistics degree and went into … investments … but my sincere congrtaulations on the grad school!
Alan Smithee has stolen most of my lines, but I’ll point out to Cicada2003 that fricatives are plosive. A sound that’s plosive means you’re breathing out to produce it – but everybody who belongs in this thread knew that, right?
