Homer beat me to it, but my way is simpler ;).
In this situation:
It was either posted in the wrong forum to begin with, or is re-posted into the wrong forum.
There’s different fora for a reason, and it’s not as an excuse for extra moderators.

I’d just like to throw in a little concept called “So what?” I mean, there’s roughly 18 bajillion members here. Not every topic gets the desired response. Such is life. Hell, even when there were only 4 bajillion members, every thread didn’t get discussed ad naseum. If someone is unable to handle the lack of interest from a message board, perhaps that person needs to consult a qualified therapist. The lot of us probably will do less good to said person than a professional.
Let’s face it. If you screw up on the SDMB, you’re generally given a warning or two. If you can’t follow the bouncing red ball enough to get along after that, well, maybe you’re a little dim and need extra help. This isn’t “Remedial Internet Communication 101.” If you get banned, you need to either take out your frustrations in a constructive way (say, fingerpainting) of find some shiny things to amuse yourself. None of us are babysitters, mods included. At the same time, no one is forcing anyone to be a member. If you don’t like it, LEAVE. PLEASE.
Okay, Sequent. I think it’s pretty well nailed down right now. Cross-posting is a no-no. Cross-posting is considered bad form net-wide. Since this is the case, cross-posting falls under rule one: Don’t be a jerk.
As for why, the rules aren’t more specific, we choose to trust our members to behave and generally police themselves. There’s no way in hell, we could write specific rules to cover every foreseeable situation, nor would we want to if it was possible. We’d rather treat you as adults. And I’m sure you’d rather be treated that way, too.
Moving threads to the proper forum, while it can be tricky, or time-consuming sometimes (due to board traffic) isn’t really that big a deal. If it happens once or twice. However, there’s only a certain amount of slack you’ll be cut. If a member insists on posting to improper forums, disciplinary steps will be taken. Posting a topic that didn’t get the desired response to another forum is cross-posting. Don’t do this; see above.
I hope this helps.
Now, eat your spinach and clean your room before you go play outside.
Ok by me. You guys are the ones doing all the work, not me. Carry on, then, carry on.
BTW, sometimes, with some subjects, it is very hard to decide which forum to post in.
Such as, I wanted to try and spark up a discussion about Otto von Bismarck (What an Asshole!)…but not really a flame on Otto, just a discussion…
Should it go in General Questions, Great Debates, etc etc?
If it’s not a question, it’s not for GQ. If it’s a debate/discussion over whether or not Otto was an asshole, GD would be the place to post. But while there is precedent for vulgarity in thread titles in GD, is calling Bismarck an asshole really integral to your proposed discussion?
Depending on how in-depth you expect the discussion to be, I’d guess either IMHO or GQ.
Typically, GQ is for questions with actual answers, not discussions. Although things like “what happens at 99% of the speed of light?” turn into more discussions than answers. But if you are asking an opinion on whether everyone thinks Otto is an asshole, it probably should go in IMHO. That’s where opinion oriented questions go.
Manhattan, and now Chronos, have to watch their forum very carefully since so much stuff just gets dumped in there because the name is General Questions.
But really, if you asking for an opinion, take it to IMHO. If you want to debate the issue with DavidB or one of the others in GD for the next six months, take it there. If you want to use a lot of curse words and rant about how awful Otto is, take it to the Pit. If you can’t think of anything else to do, put it in MPSIMS.
Think about what you are looking for and post appropriately. Opinions-IMHO, Debate-GD, Rant-Pit, Answer-GQ, Throw it out-MPSIMS, it ain’t that hard.
Jim
The first thread was clearly meant as a joke or a game. The second thread was a legitimate complaint (people are overusing the f-word, instead of actually putting some thought into their posts and titles) phrased in a humorous manner.
I don’t know why people would get the idea that they SHOULD play games or tell jokes in the Pit. Certainly, we allow language in the Pit that’s not allowed elsewhere on this message board, but the Pit description doesn’t invite jokes or games. Humor, yes, we DO want humor. But we have MPSIMS for jokes and games.
Incidentally, cross/multi posting is unacceptable in EVERY newsgroup/message board/whatever that I’ve frequented. It’s like typing your whole message in caps, it’s considered very rude.
