I’m with DMark and betenoir on this one.
The Bible-thumpers have indeed repeatedly attacked the notion of gay marriage on the grounds that gay unions would undermine the sanctity of marriage.
It’s hard to interpret “Who Wants To Marry A Millionaire” and its flock of successors as anything other than undermining the sanctity of marriage. They take an eligible man and a bunch of eligible women, or vice versa, throw 'em together, sweeten the pot with a pile of money, and say to the lucky lone man/woman, “pick one while we watch.” Yeah, that elevates the institution of marriage, alright.
The Bible-thumpers are quite good at organizing boycotts based on stuff on TV they don’t like. Has there been any whiff of that in response to “Joe Millionaire” et al? Not that has gotten on anyone’s radar screens - and it’s tough to believe that wouldn’t be considered newsworthy by newspapers, radio, etc. if these turkeys sent out a press release or two: it’s the sort of thing morning deejays love to make mention of, if only to ridicule.
Conclusion: the Bible-thumpers don’t care about “the sanctity of marriage,” they’re against gay marriage, period. Nothing’s wrong with that, in and of itself. What’s wrong is giving dishonest reasons why they’re against gay marriage.
If they’re against it because it undermines the sanctity of marriage, then they’d be equally against this form of junk TV, because it does the same. They’re not. So they were lying. Big surprise.
