Some people don’t like to give out the amount thy get payed, also some companies insist you keep it private. Someone using the website might not realize that posing their position on the list makes it very easy to work out what they put in the input. Of course they could have put anything in the input, but peeps tend to be honest. A while back there was a thread where people were invited to state their income, and quite a few dopers didn’t want to or were even shocked at being asked such a personal question.
Yeah, but you have no idea if what people are listing is a combined income or single income so it really doesn’t matter 
I personally have no problem with people knowing how much I make a year. Considering the fact that I am only the 831,927,555 richest person in the world, I don’t think that anyone will be hitting me up for a loan anytime soon.
Having been unemployed for rather longer than I’d like, I too entered $0.00 for my income and got the ‘unable to calculate’ message.
So I tried $91/year, $1 more than their suggested minimum.
The result?
I dunno… the fact that they STILL hit me up for a donation (of six cents!) makes me laugh.

By trial and error, it looks like the 50th percentile is around $868 per year.

There is not a direct connection between salary and net worth. I doubt that Bill Gates’ salary would place him in the position that he holds on the Forbes list. That goes for the Kerry’s and that guy in Nebraska. So far I am the second lowest in the ratings (due to my being retired), but please don’t feel like you need to send me donations.
On my salary when working straight out of university in German, today I would’ve been the 155,652,174 richest person in the world.
