I only have a moment to type this so I’ll be brief.
I am currently training as a fascilities manager on a university campus. In the building where I’m training there is a closet with about 5 or 6 old outdated computers (probably about 5 years old) that they were about to toss.
I know that these computers are obsolete for most of us, but I was thinking surely someone can benefit from them, perhaps underpriviledged children in underfunded grade schools. Would anyone know who I could contact to find out about this?
You are in eastern Long Island? I’d contact your local Easter Seals and donate them to one of their programs. The link is to all the ones in NY. So should you go that way…pick the one closest to you…
Doh!! - use this link. The other one is to ALL the easter seals in the US. The new link is to the national head quarters…just find the one closest to you…
If you are in the Baltimore or southern PA area, I happen to be a volunteer with a group called Volunteers for Medical Engineering (VME) (http://www.toad.net/~vme/). We accept older computers which are given out as free loaners to people with disabilities. I don’t mind driving a bit out of my way to go pick one up. I accept broken computers also. If I get enough broken ones I can combine parts and make a working one which I can take into VME. Sorry, but if you want to ship stuff to me I can’t pay shipping.
Thanks Phlosphr! I sent them an email via their contact page and I hope they’ll get back to me soon, as I know everyone involved is just itchin to get rid of the 'puters and I’m kinda asking them to hold for a bit. Unfortunately the Easter Seals don’t seem to have a location on LI as far as I could tell. The closest seems to be either NYC or Conneticut, but I’ll what they say when they contact me.
And thank you ECG. Unfortunately I’m on LI in NY. Not sure how far you are willing to go out of your way but I’m guessing 5 hours would probably be beyond your limit. (Funny thing is, I actually had a camping trip planned down in MD tentatively for the end of June. Haven’t heard from those involved so I’m guessing it’s not on.)
