Where can I find out how much Americans have saved for retirement?

I was reading a news article a few days ago that gave some stats on how much Americans have saved for retirement, something like half of the 45-50 year olds have less than $50,000 saved. There was no link to where the stats came from.

Where can I find the comprehensive numbers on this?

thanks.

One more day, must be someone here who knows the link.

Here’s a link. Dunno if that’s the study you were referring to.

That data’s a few years old. Here’s the original source, along with updated 2005 survey results:

Thanks. Yeah, I think that’s the study that was referred to in the article. Very scary when you start to go through the numbers.

Quite. 401(k) plans are the largest expected source of retirement income, yet few seem to have much money in those plans. Also, most don’t appear to know how much they’ll need at retirement or how much they’ll need to save in order to get there.

Anoter datum you might find troublesome is that less than half of US households have any money at all invested in the stock market.
