This song seems to be scarce indeed. I’ve never been able to find even a reference to it on the internet. It’s one of those songs where the remix was way more popular than the original - so popular that most people don’t know it’s a remix.
Anytime I do find an “original” Boyz in the Hood, it turns out to be the remix.
The one thing I do remember from listening to the original back in the day (and I’m surprised I remember anything because this was at least 15 years ago), is that in the remix he says:
but in the original he says:
Which also means the line before that must have been different, but I don’t remember what it was.
Does anyone know where I can find a copy of this song?
According to various sources, it first appeared on Eazy Duz It. There was a regular version of the album as well as a “clean” version. Have you checked both versions?
Eazy Duz It doesn’t contain the original version, though it may have been the first time the song appeared on an album. If I remember correctly (no cite), “Boyz N the Hood”, was the first song Ice Cube wrote for Eazy, and its modest success on the LA scene lead to NWA getting a record deal, releasing Straight Outta Compton, Eazy releasing Eazy Duz It, and everything after that. On Eazy Duz It there was a remixed version of “Boyz N the Hood” that was a much bigger hit than the original. The lyrics for that version even reference that it’s a remix, as Dre says in the beginning “Hey yo, remember that shit Eazy did a while back?” (refering to the original version of the song), and it contains an extra verse (beginning with “Woke up quick at about noon/ Just thought that I had to be in Compton soon”), after which the beat noticably changes.
For the original version of the song, I’d try an album called “NWA & Posse” that was released in 1989 following the success of NWA and Eazy. It had a couple songs by NWA/Eazy that they had done prior to hitting it big, plus some songs by other LA groups they had been friends with. I know it has a version of “Boyz N the Hood” that does not include the extra lyrics of the Eazy Duz It, and I think is the original mix, but it’s been awhile since I’ve listened to it, so I’m not completely possitive on that.
