Where can I find the pulled Microsoft "Switch" ad?

Yea, I wasn’t thrilled with them charging for the upgrade to Jaguar either. I figured it’d be free if you already had OSX. But, when I owned a PC, I didn’t like having to pay for the new Windows OS that always ended up being nearly as crappy as the previous ones…sorry, not trying to start a flame war w/ PC folks, but I hated the way the system worked.

As for cost of hardware, I think it’s simply a matter of volume; when you’re selling Dell’s by the truckload, you can naturally make 'em cheaper. Still, from a value point of view, I’ve had my G3 for a good 4 years now (I got it used from my brother, so I think it’s like 6 years old now). It works great, and the only thing I’ve had to upgrade is the OS and the hard drive size. You could always sell the thing on Ebay and use the cash to buy yourself a PC, but shelling out the cash for Jaguar may be more economical at this point. Good luck:)

Im a PC guy, but I’m gonna say something refreshingly neutral here.

I’ve used a lot of computers in my time and I’ll tell all of you, some of them really suck. But the point is, if your new mac is shot, maybe you just got a bad deal. If a mexican guy robs you, do you instantly start blaming all mexicans? I should hope not. I would expect better from dopers.

Its so obvious but MANY people have computers running MS that crash all the time and likewise for MACs. But there are plenty of people (like me, currently) running MS computers that are completely stable. Same goes for Macheads. It all depends.

Dont generalize, its just not logically sound.

Does there remain a General Question here?

Yes. Why does the " Mac OS-X : The Missing Manual" by David Pogue say on page freaking TWO that it just cannot be crashed, it’s UNIX based and insanely stable?

Lies. My question is why is Mac slamming Windows when the lawsuit is ancient history, and Mac OS-X is, in MY experience, no more stable that my Win 98SE?

Oh, and it’s more than 90 days old. :frowning:

My apologies, Manny. If I want to whine about Macintosh, then a hijack ain’t the place to do it. IIRC, the OP was indeed answered pretty fully up there.

Sorry.

wayell…OSX is UNIX-based. It is stable – stable to the point that you can restart the front end without restarting the whole computer in most lockups. I have found it more stable than 98SE, myself – MUCH more. But Pogue’s looney if he thinks OSX never crashes. It can and does. Most frequent case of it I see is a kernel panic. That’s when the machine crashes to a lot of gibberish text and ends with something like “hanging here”. If you’re a-gettin’ kernel panics, well, I assume you have already tried things like file-system checks and disk utilities and reinitializing and reinstalling and such. And you’ve probably tried resetting the PRAM and the PMU as well (PMU=that little button under the keyboard). If it keeps doing kernel panics all through that, it is probably a hardware problem of some kind. If you’ve got any thirdparty devices, can 'em and see if it works. Number one cause of kernel panics that don’t go away – bad memory. Anything else plugged in is number 2. Failing all that – you’ve tried running the bastard under a clean Mac environment and it still hangs – call the Mac help line. If you’re still within your first year (bought that computer in April, right?) you can get it fixed for free if it’s a hardware problem. Software troubleshooting they’ll do over the phone for…$49? I think $49. And if they determine it’s hardware and your computer needs repairs, they waive that.

But, er, this is probably not the place for this conversation.

Indeed it is not. athene, would you be ever so kind as to e-mail me so I might continue this dialogue with you? I’m afraid that I’m close to the moment when Manhatten will take me out behind the woodshed for a proper shellacking !!
