Where can I find this mail order place that sold counter culture books?

Your ideas intrigue me and I wish to subscribe to your newsle… wait a minute, you’re one of THEM, aren’t you?

Almost tricked me into giving you my contact information. You’re a smooth one.

For the record, and for what it’s worth, the address on my ©2000 Loompanics catalog is at Port Townsend, Wa. (I can provide PO box number, too, if you’re writing a book or something.)

'Never actually ordered anything from them, myself, but I was always curious about seeing the catalog, ever since I first read about them in The Odd Index when I was 10*—that thing was basically my primer for general geeky/weird/artsy bohemian awareness, before the internet. And I’m suddenly sad to realize I can’t find my old copy. Likely boxed up, somewhere—safe, but inaccessible. :frowning:
*What can I say—I was a bright, level-headed kid, and I guess I have a progressive/eccentric family. We even got a copy for my grandfather for christmas.

The catalog I got was rather small.

Their service was quite good. I recall ordering two or three times from them. They shipped promptly and I was very pleased with them overall.

By the way, I’m almost certain that I’m referring to Paladin Press and not Loompanics.

AAMOF, the more I think about it, the more I am pretty sure that the name of the company from which I ordered was Paladin and not Loompanics.

The books themselves are very likely out of date today. But at the time, they were very enjoyable reading.

I especially liked reading books by the people who told how they went underground, changed their identity, pulled a fast one (or two) on the govt. and went into a new line of business like a paid assassin. They were very enjoyable reading.

You’re probably talking about Ken Rex McElroy. More than 30 years after he was killed in broad daylight, people still won’t say who did it. My guess is that the town is probably STILL afraid of him.

Ten Speed Press has published some off-kilter things over the years, although they have plenty of mainstream titled too.

In real life there is no such thing as magical self-defense, sorry. Those books are written for suckers by delusionists. Following that information will just get you hurt.

For example, when the self-defense bullshit hits the real-word fan:

But if you are determined, I give you Dim Mak.

Some things that sort of overlapped with Loopanics are the various organizations listed in High Weirdness by Mail by Ivan Stang:

I have seen some info about Dim Mak. It involves striking the most vulnerable points in the body.

Do you consider it to be totally worthless? Or do you think it has some merit?

Worthless. The claims about the vulnerable spots are wildly overblown. A fatal flaw of all of these types of “systems” is that they assume a compliant opponent.
