Where did the Madalyn M O'Hair hand-stabbing story come from?

I’ve heard this story mentioned, mostly here, and I’m wanted to use it as an example in a article I’m writing. But I can’t find any cites on it, outside of references on this site by Libertarian (who seems to be taking a break from involved threads). I know I’ve heard it elsewhere, but I can’t remember myself.

Basically, it goes that Madalyn O’Hair sneezes, some guy says “God bless you!” and O’Hair stabs the guy’s hand with her pen. Wouldn’t exactly out of character for her (to either do or just imagine doing in a speech): but it wouldn’t exactly be out of character for those making stories up about her either.

I don’t care whether the story is true or not, as the effect of the story itself is the key to my usage in the article, not its veracity, but it would be really nice to know where the story came from.

So does anyone know where this story came from? Or even remember where you heard it from?

An update: I’ve found references to a major profile of O’Hair in Life magazine (circa 1964) that may contain the story. Anyone have access to these backissues? Or know where I can get access?

I would think the New York public library would have the back issues.

Yep, checking up on it, though no guarantee this’ll have anything. Also tried emailing atheists.org, the current banner wavers for O’Hair.
