Where did the putting of a slice of cheese on top of an apple pie come from?

Apropos of nothing, this is what Travis Bickle orders in the diner on his lunch date with Betsy in Taxi Driver.

Apple or pear pie with a slice of sharp-flavored cheese (sharp cheddar, Roquefort, or an aged Gruyère) melted over it is a wonderful pleasure, especially with a semi-dry white wine or a lighter Trappist-style ale. I think M.F.K. Fisher wrote an essay about this (maybe in The Art of Eating).

This is where I come in to say that I love me some sharp cheese spread on plums. One time I got it in my head from cherry pie/cheddar combo and darn if it isn’t good! Looks horrible, though, if you try it close your eyes.

Oh woe, I somehow managed, in sort of glance-reading, to read that as you had got the cheese and plums in your eyes. Eek. But in your mouth it’s probably very good. Stilton with grapes is good too.
I must either visit an optician or take care to read more carefully.

After I posted earlier, I made an apple pie. I’ve just now gotten around to having a piece and let me tell you, apple pie with cheddar is de-lish! I just wish I had some sharp cheddar instead of this lame mild. Sometimes it really sucks having a bland midwestern family.

In Pulp Fiction, Bruce Willis’s wife talks about ordering a slice of blueberry pie with a piece of melted cheese on top of it. I always thought that was totally bizarre.

Toldja.

My work is done.

I’ve only ever heard of it in the movie “Taxi Driver” - never before nor since, and I’ve lived in NJ, Atlanta, and San Francisco. Sounds tasty, though - what can’t be improved by cheese?
