Cheddar cheese on apple pie (have you heard of this?)

So my mom has never heard of heating up a slice of cheddar cheese on a piece of apple pie. This surprised me…until I asked the rest of the Thanksgiving guests.
Seems out of 15 people here, I was the only one who ever heard of this food combination. Made me wonder how many do know about it or have, at least, heard of it (or perhaps, dare I say, actually TRIED it).

What say you? Poll coming.

I’ve heard of it. Always meant to try it, but rarely have apple pie around.

I like it but haven’t eaten if for a while. Apples go nicely with cheddar cheese.

Last night I was reading a book about historical eateries in my state and I came across a recipe from a turn of the century boarding house for apple pie with a cheddar crust!

I thought this was very common. Never sounded like a good idea to me, though.

I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but, you can’t just go around putting cheese on everything.

Delicious! But yes, I’m aware that people who dont read noir fiction aren’t aware of this convention, which presages the ready availability of ice cream as a topping.

On the other hand, I’m continually surprised by the sheer number of people who have never heard of, much less read a translation of, The Epic of Gilgamesh.

Stranger

I grew up in Old New England, and that is how apple pie is always served.

I never heated the cheese–you just eat it with the pie. But yes, it’s good.

Bonus points if you eat apple pie with cheddar cheese for breakfast.

My mom always did this on her slice of pie when we were growing up, and I always thought that it looked beyond disgusting. Since then, I’ve tried it, and it’s. . .well. It’s okayish. It’s nothing hugely awesome, but it’s okay. It has to be actual cheddar though; for me, American cheese just doesn’t cut it.

My parents are English and they serve a hunk of cheese with lots of sweet stuff, most notably fruit cake at Christmas. If it is nice sharp cheese it is terrific. I have been mocked for serving it like that but the mockers quickly become converts once they start eating.

I’ve heard of it.

Not only have I never tried it though, I’ve never even seen it tried.

I’m not a dessert person, but I do enjoy cheese. I’d probably just skip the pie and have cheese if I was given the option.

Apple pie without the cheese
Is like a kiss without a squeeze

I’ve heard of it. I like eating apples with Cheddar cheese, but I’ve never had apple pie with cheese.

I made that apple green chili pie recipe someone posted recently for thanksgiving. The cheddar crust was delicious but a slice on top would have been phenomenal.

I eat a chunk of sharp cheddar with just about everything, but I’m not going to cover my pie in a slice of cheese. I can’t remember the last time I had apple pie, now that I think about it, but I’m pretty sure there were no toppings involved. I’m not really much of a pie person. I know, I know, that’s illegal around here.

I love it. My girlfriend refuses to even try it. She thinks it sounds grotty.

I like cake more than pie anyway which is heresy but whatever. I also eat my hot dogs with ketchup and Coldstone cake batter ice cream is my kryptonite so clearly I am not a connoisseur of fine dining. (I guess you could call me a common sewer?)

I like apple pie and I like cheddar cheese. Together, I think they are OK.

I’ve known about it since I was a child. Grandma would serve us kids pie with ice cream and grate some cheddar on her own pie. I used to think it was nasty, but now I love it. I like it with cheese or ice cream equally, generally I eat it with ice cream, but sometimes the cheese is just the thing…

Ayep.

It doesn’t sound disgusting, but it doesn’t sound good, and since that wasn’t an option, I went with “disgusting”, since I do have an opinion on it. Apple pie is seldom my pie of choice anyway.

Is there a New New England?
