Made me laugh, MOL.
I heard about it on the Dope a week or two ago, and yesterday I decided, what the heck, I have some leftover apple pie (from a dinner on Saturday), and I have some cheddar cheese. It wasn’t bad, but it didn’t seem to me that the flavors really complemented each other in any way.
I’ve tried it. I think I first read about it in one of James Herriot’s books, which are set in the Yorkshire Dales, in England.
I’ve never had cheddar on pie, but I love me some sliced apple and cheese for snacks.
I am from Yorkshire and at the moment am the only voter in a “never heard of it” category. Of course, that doesn’t mean that you are wrong, just that it may not be a common Yorkshire habit.
Damn you! That’s what I was coming in here to post.
Peter DeVries wrote much of a whole novel around a guy who liked cheese with his pie. The counterman at the restaurant he often went to refused to serve it with cheese, so the hero brought his own and surreptitiously put it on himself.
One day the counterman caught him. “Did I serve you cheese with your pie?” he asked.
“Yes, I believe you did.”
“No, I’m sure I didn’t. But I’ll have to charge you for it anyway.”
Too late.
I never heard of this until I moved to the Midwest, and it sounded gross at first. But then I thought about it, and hell, cheese and apples are nice together, why not?
I actually tried it for the first time last week, when my dad made an apple pie. It was okay. I like the combination of sweet and savory.
Marie Callender’s, anyone?
Yeah, I’ve heard of it (at Marie Callender’s), but never tried it. Vanilla Ice Cream is the only way to fly, when you want great apple pie!
I’ve known about this since I was a kid. I thought it was common knowledge. I’ve seen it melted on the crust in a criss-cross pattern.
That said, I’ve never tried it. The thought of it makes me ill. Then again, I’m not a cheese person; cheese on just about anything is a game-ender for me. There’s certainly no way I’m eating cheese on pie.
Only way to eat it. Ala mode is for sissies.
Never heard of it until I read the thread about the apple cheddar chile pie earlier today.
I do like slices of apple with slices of cheddar. Apple pie with cheddar sounds… on the good side of okay, I guess. I’m not the world’s biggest apple pie fan to begin with.
I do want to try the apple cheddar chile pie, though,
Is that where that’s from?
Not originally, but it’s on their placematts or something. At least it was years ago when I used to have lunch there from time to time.
… Blueberry pie … and on top, a thin slice of melted cheese …
CMC fnord!
It has to be GOOD cheddar and home-made pie made from good apples.
I am southerner and this is against tradition, but what the heck, I also love sushi… so sue me.
Never had it, but apple and cheese is a good combination.
Same experience here: never heated. Slices off a chunk of old cheddar with apple pie … mmm, good!
Plus, I get bonus points!
Wholeheartedly agree with this. And it isn’t necessarily how I always want my apple pie, but it is yummy.
