Cheddar cheese on apple pie (have you heard of this?)

This was on the Dick Van Dyke Show.

Laura doesn’t want Rob to play golf in the morning 'cause she says he’ll be too tired at the party she’s giving for her uncle. Rob plays golf anyway and gets sick.

Laura phones up Rob and tells him to bring home ice cream for the apple pie.

By the time Rob gets home he’s really sick. And instead of getting vanilla ice cream he get’s black licorice ice cream

Pretty tasty. It’s on the menu at Mels Drive-In.

In the movie Taxi Driver, De Niro’s character orders apple pie with cheese. I had always thought this was to show that his character was batshit insane. It was only a few years ago thought I found out it was a common thing to do.

Apple + cheese tastes better than apple pie + cheese.

Most definitely starts out life in the US in New England, just before the turn of the century. No doubt it came from some part of Old England.

In my family apple pie is served warm with ice cream the first day and cold with cheddar the next day.

I just don’t really find cheddar to be that good a cheese anymore. And not because I’m some type of snob: colby, colby-jack, Swiss. provolone, mozzarella, Parmesan, and cream cheese are not highbrow tastes, either.

Now, Parmesan and apples doesn’t sound too bad, but even that doesn’t sound like it would go good with apple pie. Cheddar just sounds weird. But, since I haven’t tried it, I don’t see how I can call it disgusting, so I went with “no opinion.” I mean, I surely can’t have an informed opinion without trying it.

It’s not traditional in my family, but my best friend’s family did it and his Mom (Indianan,IIRC) would always put a slice of cheddar off the rectangle on the homemade apple pie, heat it in the microwave till just melty and warm, and serve it with vanilla ice cream… can’t really think of a better way to eat apple pie.

Really super sharp chedder, delicious.

IME, its a Northern Thang

I grew up in NE Ohio. It’s not all that common here - more of a New England thing. It’s supposed to be a piece of sharp cheddar cheese on the side, not melted on top. I’ve had it and it’s OK, but I’d far prefer a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

My grandfather was fond of chedder cheese AND ice cream on his apple pie - “thank God I’m weak,” he would say.

He died before I was born (of heart disease, unsurprisingly) but my mother always told the story when she made apple desserts. Eventually I tried it myself; it’s not horrible, but it just doesn’t really rock my world.

I’ve not tried it, but I want to, it sounds pretty good.

I’ve also thought about trying a granny smith apple with cheese, without its being in a pie. I was eating a granny smith all by itself one day for lunch, and just couldn’t finish it (waaaaay too sour). Someone suggested I try it with cheddar, which is apparently supposed to take away some of that sour bite.

So maybe this is a reason people eat it with apple pie? It might be that the combination only works if it’s a certain kind of apple + a certain kind of cheddar. I could just be pulling things out of my ass, but that’s how it’s starting to sound to me.

I’ll bet it wouldn’t be uncommon to Indianan, Dave Letterman. I dispute that it is purely a New England thing, I think it is more of an “American Farm Thing”.

I love seeing which pies Dave Letterman’s Mom wil fix for Thanksgiving. She is quite the trendsetter, no joke.

Sugar Cream was the big one she made this year, I made one once for a girlfriend. I think I got sum for that pie… or at lest the effort.

Here in Amish Country we pretty much call it shoofly pie… not a great difference.

I like my apple pie that way. I’m not a fan of a la mode anything, really - ice cream is not for on other things, it’s for eating by itself. Ice cream makes other things soggy.

I have never had it with heated cheese.
I love cheddar cheese. I like apple pie.

To me, I’d rather just have the cheese. The pie kind of lessens the appeal of the cheese.

If I had to choose between cheddar cheese and some kind of fruit or my absolute most favorite junk food, I’d take the cheese and fruit.
I have never had cheddar and fruit taste bad. I don’t like Granny Smith apples but I’ll eat them with cheddar, because yes - it does cut down on the sourness.

My Massachusetts relatives eat apple pie with a slice of good Vermont cheddah.

It’s the only way to eat apple pie, and I’ve had cheddar on other kinds of pie as well. The tartness of the cheese complements and balances the sweetness of the pie. Try it with rhubarb pie.
