MeanOldLady said, “I don’t know where to put the period”. ~or~ MeanOldLady said, “I don’t know where to put the period.”

The period goes inside the quotation marks.

But don’t take my word for it…

According to my copy of Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary periods and commas are placed inside the quotation marks, colons and semicolons are placed outside.
