Where do I sign up for SD membership?

After three months as a guest, I’d like to make it official, only where do i do this?

Click on your UserCP (upper left), then click on Paid Subscriptions (last link on the bottom left).

Thanks, Giraffe, only I don’t see User CP on my screen. Help, please? I should add that I’m one of the older posters here and not entirely conversant with computers.

Upper left hand corner, right above the “Post Reply” button.

Underneath the title of the thread on the page, there should be a blue bar. This bar will say, from left to right, “User CP, FAQ Calendar, New Posts, Search, Quick Links, Log Out.”

It should be right above the “Post Reply” button.

Near the top of the page you are viewing right now, there is a banner that says The Straight Dope.
Below that, there are a few lines telling you what forum and thread you are reading:

Under THAT, there is a blue bar, with these words:

Click on the words User CP.
Note that it will take you to a PayPal site for actually paying. Let us know if you need more help then.

ETA: Shakes fist at Captain Amazing, stealth Ninja. FYI, there are two Post Reply buttons. One at the top of the screen, one at the bottom of the screen. User CP is just above the one at the top.

Thank you one and all for your help. I see that I’ll have to set up a Paypal account. Once I do that, I’ll join.

You don’t need a PayPal account to pay via PayPal. Just a credit or debit card.

You don’t need a paypal account. Here are instructions (originally posted by TubaDiva in another thread):

Here’s what you do, in order:

  1. UserCP/Paid Subscriptions.

  2. Indicate the time you want 1 year/2 years.

  3. CLICK on the button that says “Order Using PayPal.” You’re not necessarily going to use a PayPal account to PAY for this subscription BUT the processing is being done by PayPal. Don’t stress over this.

  4. You will be coaxed, enticed, etc. to use a PayPal account to fund this transaction. That will be large and obvious. Unless that’s what you really want to do disregard this. Instead there is a little (damn little) hyperlink that says “DON’T HAVE A PAYPAL ACCOUNT?” Click on that link, if you intend to use a credit card or a debit card.

  5. Now you can either register for a new PayPal account OR you can pay using a card. There will be a adropdown box on the right hand side for you to enter your country. When you do the page beneath that choice will show you the credit card options for your country.

Indicate your country of choice (default is "United States) and hit the button.

The pane will now display “PAY WITH A CREDIT CARD.” Fill in the blanks as appropriate and process.

You do not have to open a PayPal account to pay your subscription. If you already have a PayPal account you do not have to use it.

Thank you all very much for the time you took to help me sign up. It was really kind of you. As it happens, however, I’m not going to enroll after all, as I am about to be suspended or more likely banned for a shirty rant I aimed at a little threadshitter in the TBBT: Meaning of Stephanie Throws a Sheep thread I started in Cafe Society It should have gone in the Pit, but damn it felt good to unload on that little snot.

I read the poster’s message as a comment on the ephemeral nature of jokes about the internet/technology, and not at all directed at you. You might want to reconsider your response.

And it usually takes a bit more to get suspended/banned (although your later response in that thread doesn’t speak well for your chances).
