I’m not too fond of the Earth-based GL’s as a rule. I got into the Green Lantern Corps mythology through the “Tales of the Green Lantern Corps” that used to run in the back of Green Lantern in the 1980’s. There’s been precious little of this since 1986 or so. But I hear that Dave Gibbons, one of the greatest GLC writer/artists, is doing a new GL Corps book as a separate series from the new Hal Jordan book.
Compared to the previous eighteen years of GL as a single Earth-based hero, I’d rather recommend the Tangent Green Lantern, who’s a completely different character.
Eh, he’s kinda funny in the Griffen/DeMatteis stuff and I think they finally found his character in the past couple of years: jackass, but good at heart.
Note to self: preview. I found a local shop that does back issues for $1 each and have been raiding the JLEs. Thanks to the JLE/JLA crossover I might need to start raiding the JLAs before I move.
The only potential problem with comics like The Golden Age and The New Frontier is that part of their appeal is based on the reader’s knowledge of the characters. The writers assume the reader already has a general awareness of DC history.
I hear ya, but at some point youn just have to dive in. The new Green Lantern series is probably the best place to start right now. It’ll certainly be the easiest to find.
middleman, long story short Hal Jordan is back from the dead. John Stewart is still the JLA GL. Guy, Kyle, and Kilowag are featured on the cover of “The Corps,” so its’ safe to assume they’ll be helping out with them. Guy has popped up in the mini-series “OMAC” where he is forming a posse of the Giffen/DeMatteis JLA to find the murderer of a former teammate. In the current mini-series “The Rann-Thanagar War” Kyle and Kilowag are space GLs and have gotten wrapped into the titular (tee hee) war. Don’t know if Kyle will return and be the East Coast GL while Hal watches the west or what. He’s on the cover of Infinite Crisis #1, so he’s not dead yet and hopefully won’t die ( : fingers crossed : ).
Also, Jade dumped Kyle for some banker guy, so no loose ends there.
