Where do tribal people go to have sex?

In most western societies, sexual intercourse is something done “behind closed doors,” usually in the bedroom. We even use “sleep with” as a synonym for “have sex with.” However, in traditional tribal societies, and throughout most of western history as well, the custom has been for the entire family or clan to share common sleeping area.
Thus my question: Does a couple sharing a teepee/longhouse/igloo/tent with their children (and possibly other relatives), have to just do it there, in front of everyone? If so, are people in these cultures just more “open” about sexual activity, maybe seeing it as a natural bodily function? (“Hey, mom and dad? Could you be quiet over there? I have a hunting expedition tomorrow and I need to get some sleep!”)
Information and observations from students of anthropology, or from anyone who was actually raised in a teepee/longhouse/igloo/tent would be appreciated. The “National Geographic” specials never seem to cover this.

I guess you’ve never seen Little Big Man.

Yep, it wasn’t until the invention of the fireplace and such that you get seperate rooms being the norm in Western Society. Tribal units, and pre-fireplace Europeans, among others, just crawled under the blankets and went to it. It was a natural activity, and since most children died before maturity, a constant replenishing was necessary.

But the OP presumes that all sexual activity took place after dark. It didn’t. People then, like now, would hump whenever and wherever they could…under the bushes, in the river, behind the hut, on top of that elephant…

From my admittedly foggy memeory of my anthropology undergrad degree, that’s pretty much the long and short of it. So-called primitives have a different idea of the necessities of privacy, and often correspondingly a differing idea of what constitutes impropriety. My professor told me of observing two children publically “playing doctor” in a manner that would send parents from our society immediately into a tissy, separating the kids and giving them a strong talking to why that was not appropriate. The adults in their society just smiled and said “How cute, they’re playing grownup!”

Aww, this is kind of taking me back to my college days…

Is that a leg?
