I’m looking for an objective news source. I don’t actually think such thing exists, but surely some papers/blogs must do a better job than others. I guess the question is this - who do you trust to tell you what’s going on in the world without putting in too much of their own agenda (even if it agrees with yours)?
BBC news website. I don’t know why I trust it, but I do.
(Anything from the Big British Castle, I tend to believe, especially Radio 4.)
Google News. If there’s a topic that interests me, I can scroll down through all of the articles on that topic, and read about it from as many newspapers as I like.
Here, Yahoo! News, and Reddit.
Right here. I figure if it’s important enough, someone will post about it, and I’m automatically treated to all sorts of opinions about it.
I really don’t have time to read the paper, and I’m convinced that all TV news is crap.
NPR, mostly. I’m in the car enough that it provides me with a good overview. It manages to have a liberal slant while still providing voice conservatives and asking tough questions of both sides.
Same here. Depending on the scope of the event being reported on, I can read about it in several US mainstream publications, foreign media, etc. I tend to avoid the links to 3rd tier blogs and stuff, though.
Beyond that, I usually visit the Chicago Tribune website a few times a day just for the local events.
NewYorkTimes.com
ABC.com
And here.
I get most of my U.S. news from great debates and the pit, for local news I use google news /NL
It’s quite balanced and a little left of centre politically, but not by a massive degree. As far as I know it tends not to make things up either (obviously UK-centric but it has good coverage of world news too).
Kyla is right.
For diversity of sources, G is hard to beat.
BBC News for me too. Well, written, objective, lots of interesting articles, many points of view. Big on geopolitical news, low on Lindsay Lohan’s exploits. News heaven.
Weekend Update?
Google News, CNN, and New York Times are my first thing in the morning news sites. And I listen to NPR when in the car.
And I check a few local papers online everyday -
Press Democrat
sfgate.com for the SF Chronicle
Home News Tribune
Centre Daily Times
and The Boston Globe twice a week or so for The Big Picture.
I also often end up at other major papers through Google News - Washington Post, Dallas Morning News, WSJ, Bloomberg, etc. etc. etc.
Google News, CNN, NYT
Here (first place I check every morning)
CNN, Fox, msnbc (I hit all three of these next)
BBC (to see what them furriners are “thinking”)
Then I hit Daily Kos and ESPN when I get home.
ESPN
The Daily Show
The Straight Dope
NYT
Washington Post
Asashi for Japanese news
NPR.
Wait Wait, specifically.
Economist
New Yorker
Charlie Rose
Charlie and the Economist deal with more current issues than the New Yorker. Between the three I get a pretty balanced news fix.
For the shallow issues of the day I visit the Huffington Post. They will inform me on what the monkeys are jumping about.
It is also pretty fast. So I check their headlines and go somewhere else to get a more in depth story.
