Earlier (maybe in that other thread) I asked if anybody used All My Faves – News as a source.
Any names pop up there that you go to more than “once in a while”?

I voted CNN and ESPN for sports… more out of how ubiquitous they are in my experience than for accuracy or content…
I missed this post before posting that summary in Post #40, but I have included your sources in this list:
our local paper’s site
daily papers for the bigger cities in the area
Two local papers online
Lots of local newspapers (most of them weeklies) stuff)
Local TV Station website
local news sites (10TV and the Columbus Dispatch)
TV stations from nearby metropolitan areas (mostly for weather and local
big TV news outlets like _______
Australian news sites
Christian Science Monitor
Daily Kos
daily mail
Google Reader
The New Republic
Politico
The Risks Digest
Salon
USA Today
World Press Review
I’m advocating another poll that would add these low-voters from the current poll:
Chicago Tribune 4 4.00%
Time 4 4.00%
Bloomberg 3 3.00%
Marketwatch 3 3.00%
Christian Science 2 2.00%
The Daily 2 2.00%
NBC Sports 2 2.00%
Seeking Alpha 2 2.00%
Talking Points Memo 2 2.00%
Telegraph 2 2.00%
the Week 2 2.00%
Der Spiegel Online 1 1.00%
Deutsche Welle 1 1.00%
Feedler News Reader 1 1.00%
I’m going to give it until Saturday before posting the new one, in hopes that other online sources can be added.
How the SDMB works as a news source for me is primarily to alert me to big stories in the US (and occasionally elsewhere) before the mainstream British media gets hold of them – the Traynor shooting being a good recent example. It must have been at least a week after seeing the first threads here and following the links that I saw the story on the BBC.
Just a bump before putting up a follow-up poll tomorrow.
Just pointing out again that I consider the SDMB to be a self-referential news source. In other words, any answer to the question “Where do you get your online news?” must include the SDMB.
Here’s the “final summary” from this thread’s poll from which I’ll be adding those sources with less than 5% of the Voters to the other names collected above in Post #43 to make the list for a “second pass” poll to be posted soon.

I only ever check Google News, but then, Google News links me back to most of the poll options, and more. So I’m getting news from dozens of places, but only checking Google. Because of that, I only selected “Google News” from the poll. I hope that’s right.
Quite so. Thanks.
Google News (homepage)
SDMB (most visited by far)
Wired (plus Discover, not listed)
Huffington (thank Og for Adblock/Noscript!)
I also voted NPR on the basis of radio.
Kind of a tangent from this question … this site (http://www.newsprism.com/ is kind of handy when I’m looking for spin on certain things. Not to mention a nice one stop list of links to everything in your poll, and lots more. No headlines though, so it wouldn’t count for the poll.
My Go-to is Newser.com
Their motto is “Read less, know more”. It’s laid out in a grid of pictures with one short sentence describing the article. After you click on the article, you’re taken to a one or two paragraph synopsis of the article using mostly verbatim language, and there is always a link to the original full length article.
I like it because If all I need to or care to know is in the title, I don’t have to waste my time reading the minutia. I can read the summary to get all the salient details, which is almost always enough info for a random story. If the topic really interests me, then I’ll read the full length article.
They update constantly and it’s almost always a place to see at least one new thing when you’re bored and have seen all the regular places.
I haven’t detected any partisan bias to any of the articles at all, but that might also be due to the fact that all of the voting (you can vote a story to be hilarious, depressing, scary, intriguing, brilliant or annoying) tends to go with my left-leaning thinking.
I’m actually kinda surprised it isn’t a bigger thing than it is, because they really crank out the content. I’d be interested to hear fellow Dopers opinions about the site.
Since both polls on this subject are still open, this pair of summary sorts is just an “in progress” reference. Posted in both threads for comparison’s sake.
