Where Do You Read?

In the bathroom in the morning
In the train on my way to work
In the bus on my way to work
In the bus on my way back home
In the train on my way back home
Lying in the couch in the evening
Lying in bed before we go to sleep

Did I mention I like reading? And my wife too?

In bed
On the couch
In front of the TV on the couch or floor
On the train or subway to work
At work during breaks between my classes
While eating alone
At the bar after work
While standing in line anywhere
While waiting for anyone
On the pot
While pages load on the 'puter
Occassionally while walking
At the beach
In the car (I don’t drive - the designated chauffer may get a free reading though :))
The newspaper sometimes gets read while doing boring office work
Anywhere else I may find myself without something to engage the old grey matter

Almost always on the bus or subway, or when waiting for same. When I’m at home I’m almost always on the computer.

I’m another, “I read everywhere” type. I read in bed. On the coach. In the car, if I’m stuck waiting for someone or something, or if I’m on a long trip and someone else is driving. On a bus or plane. In the coffee house at school. In a restaurant if I’m alone. In the morning while I’m putting on my make-up and doing my hair – I keep one of those little wire book-racks on my vanity. In the kitchen while I’m cooking – I have another book-rack in there. In the bathtub and the hot-tub. Everywhere. Anywhere I am, if I’m not doing something else that actively precludes it, I’m reading. Heck, I read while nursing my son – my daughter was bottle-fed, so I couldn’t read while I was feeding her (because I had to hold the bottle). And my son enjoys reading more than my daughter does – coincidence? I think not.

Jess

In bed (though not lately, since my lamp is broken).

On the can.

In a bus, plane, train, etc.

Walking home (I used to get annoyed because the bus would get to my stop just when I reached the good bit).

Occasionally, in a Lay-Z-Boy.

In a cafe. Unfortunately, people usually talk to me there.

Bed. Bad habit was drinking soda at the same time. I’d swallow enough air I was due for a HUGE belch. WHne I did this as a kid my mom would yell “What was that?”

Used to love the tub, but when my folks renovated the bath, they got a 5’ tub, not the old 5 1/2’. Made me sit too upright, you need to slouch under the water a bit. Of course, my house also has a small tub, so this is in the past.

I read on the back porch, at night after the children are in bed. After a day of work and taking care of my home and family, this is my time and I cherish it! Sleep, who needs it? I must have my two to three hours of reading time daily!

I love reading in bed – the most comfortable way for me is to prop about four pillows behind me to lounge on, and then put another pillow on my lap to prop up the book. Sometimes, the cat likes to sit on the lap pillow, so then I rest the book on the cat. My second choice is to turn around in bed, and prop my feet up on the wall while I read. I was always getting in trouble as a kid for leaving smudge marks on the wall from my feet. But now I think “Ha ha! I’m an adult and pay my own rent, so I can put my feet wherever I want to!” It’s these little things, you know, that get me through the day.

I’m a big reader of children’s books, so I keep a supply of those Scholastic book club paperbacks for reading the tub (stuff like Ramona the Pest and Twenty and Ten and all of Ruth Chew’s books). They are just the right length so that you can finish one during one bath, and if they should happen to get wet, chances are you can buy another one for a dime at a yard sale.

As I kid, I loved to read while sitting on the bathroom floor. This started, I imagine, when I would sit on the cool tiles on a hot summer day (we didn’t have any of that fancy air conditioning). Once in a while I find myself doing this for old time’s sake.

I read on the subway, and this only causes problems when I get so caught up in what I am reading that I miss my stop. Although, on the plus side, I have seen some very interesting neighborhoods I would not have otherwise visited as a result.

…I’m probably one of the worse compulsive readers out there. I read anything and everything, and anywhere. I can’t even keep books on the passenger seat in my car anymore; I tend to start reading TS Eliot at intersections while I’m waiting for the light to change. When I caught myself doing it, I was absolutely horrified.

On the can, I’ve been known to read the back of shampoo/soap/bubble bath bottles. I keep a book by the computer, and I read it when I’m waiting for pages to load. I was notorious in high school for reading during class. I used to work in a public library and would get behind because I started reading the books I was checking in.

I probably have some sort of psychological disorder…but I can’t help reading whatever is put in front of me. (I can, however, dismiss propaganda and bullshit…)

At work- I’ve got a pile of non-work-related books in the corner and I read for an hour or so during my lunch if I’m not suckered into playing another match of Counterstrike.

In bed- I’m one person sleeping in a queen-size, so the other half of the bed currently has about five books on there. This is usually my lighter reading- often I’ll read a paragraph and then realize that I remember nothing of the last five pages, and decide it’s time to sleep.

In the bath- It’s usually a shower for me, but when I take an hour or so out of my day to recover from aches and pains, I’ll drag a few books in there with me. My bathroom reading shelf has been called pretentious, shabby, pathetic, and impressive. I call it wet.

On the couch- Sprawled out on a black leather sofa, which I bought from an ex-roommate at an obscenely low cost because he didn’t want to have to move it. I still haven’t gotten any lights for the living room, so I can’t really read in there past sunset.

In a folding chair in the computer room- The second bedroom has been converted into a room with folding tables, folding chairs, and electronic hardware galore. When I’m lurking online at home and things are slow, I’ll flip through a book or two there.

I can’t read in the car, sadly, and mass transit in Minneapolis is pathetic, so that’s about it for my usual fare.

And Angel of the Lord? I’m in the same boat. Just today as I wandered into the restroom at work, I picked the stall that had a newspaper on the floor- even though the newspaper was just the real estate listings, it was something to read. (Shameful admission: I’ve found myself going through things in my wallet just to read something while in the can. I’m so pathetic.)
