The problem with IT workers is all they want to do is sit at their desk doing IT stuff. Just as there is more to life than computers, there is more to a job than simply performing tasks.

For some people yes; but a wise man knows his limitations. However, you seem to be misunderstanding the phrase. Just as Doing X can be a project, so can Managing Y also be a project.

That said, given that it can be so misunderstood, perhaps that in itself is a valid reason for not saying it.
