Where do you want to live?

Why do you want to live in Detroit? You realize that Detroit looks like bombed out Berlin at the end of the second world war.

No noisy neighbors.

because Mars doesn’t have a whole lot to support human life.

I’m pretty sure you don’t have the faintest fucking clue what Detroit is like, nevermind Berlin after World War II. I’ve lived here my entire life, you’re just some dumb kid on a message board.

Its called artificial life support.

which need energy. where are you going to find an energy source on Mars?

Yeah because Detroit hasn’t a care in the world lol

Its called you bring supplies with you

Somewhere quiet and far away from everything, but close to the shops and public transport. I’d like a lake and mountain view, and lots of places to walk, but with no steep hills. I want a temperate climate, but with snow in the winter and tropical rain at night.

The Pyrinees. I like the landscape, I feel at home with the people (that is, I feel at home with a bunch of people outsiders generally find impossible… I never claimed to be normal), and I can breathe. Unimpeded breathing for weeks at a time is a beautiful thing.

I want to live in places for a while until I get too old to enjoy them. I live in the Bay Area now, and the weather is great but the traffic is bad and its expensive. I want to live in Manhattan for six months or so, which will let us walk to museums and theaters. I want to live in London for six months for the same reason. Maybe Australia. And I wouldn’t mind Princeton - when we lived there we got to walk three blocks to hear Luis Alvarez give an early talk about the dinosaur killing asteroid.

Forget beaches, I want to be near good bookstores, good libraries, and culture.

A slightly safer, more prosperous iteration of Cape Town.

Torrance Ca, perfect weather. Have been here all my life and just can’t bear to leave the weather.

I’d like to have a big Rv and the money to just drive and stay wherever I want depending upon my moods.

Right here where I am now.

But what about your family? Mars ain’t the kind of place to raise your kids.

We have a friendly disagreement about retirement (3 years, 10 months and 17 days from now, but who’s counting?). She wants to RV around the country; I want to live on a boat. We’ve agreed to compromise by staying based in our (DFW) home, and alternating between boating around the Gulf and traveling in the RV, depending on seasons. We save a lot of money by choosing “smaller than liveaboard” on both vehicles, but large enough to spend 3-4 weeks aboard without knifing one another. Hopefully this will work out.

To answer Johnny’s question: I’m not likely to leave Texas, so I’d pick the South Padre Island area.

I live in Houston and I love it.

But the true answer is that I would live anywhere, even in a cardboard box, as long as it’s with SWMBO.

Looks perfect. I’ll buy a worthless, old boat when I get there.

I want to move back to the apartment I had in an 1870-built stone mansion on the outskirts of Pottstown, PA. A couple acres of wooded ground with deer and wild turkeys wandering about, and every once in a while you’d hear that lonesome train whistle, not so close or so often that it would get annoying.

It’s why my towel is always around my neck.
