Where does the phrase "Gods speed" come from

Was the almighty ever in a drag race, did he run the 1500m in a few seconds, can he beat the speed of light. From what I heard somewhere he is light so is Gods speed actually Light speed so then in Star Trek when they go to warp (faster than light) they beat the big guy… Just wanted to know what’s up with that.

It’s “God speed”, not “God’S speed.” The phrase is short for “God speed you on your way”, i.e, hope your trip is fast and safe.

Huh. I always thought it meant to travel at the speed of God, which is pretty darn quick.

Guy Propski is correct.

but still does not explain where it comes from. I am not religious so do not know all of God’s actions but when I see depictions he’s mostly up in the clouds and not moving and does not have legs …
Did he ever have to be somewhere and beat, lets say, the Devil?

Thanks for the quick replies though they were done with God speed I guess

Ack. Now you’re making me look stuff up. [pulling out the dictionary]

Godspeed -'speed*\ n [ME god speid fr. the phrase God spede you God prosper you]: a prosperous journey : SUCCESS <bade him ~>

(* I don’t know how to make the “e” with a line on top to make a long “e” sound.)

When John Glenn returned to space at the age of 76, there was a cartoon showing him as a geezer orbiting Earth in a slow jalopy. Behind him was a long line of orbiters, grumbling, “God, speed it up, John Glenn!”

Ah success and this my first day and all …

Thanks

According OED it means “to express a wish for the success of one who is setting out on some journey or enterprise.”

The first known instance of the word goes back to around 1470. Scottish poet Robert Henryson wrote in (I think) Morall Fabillis of Esope:

This burges brocht thame sone quhair thay suld be; Without god speid thair herberie was tane.

Don’t read too much into it, vmax. It’s like “God Bless” or “God be with you.” The speaker wants to make sure your journey is quick and successful, so s/he is calling on a higher power to ask for a blessing. God’s not doing the moving; rather, He’s watching over you and giving you protection.

You’re not seriously proposing that, because you’ve seen paintings of God without legs, you believe that He doesn’t have legs???

He could have lost them in an accident.

Nah don’t know what He has, might be tentacles for all I care. 't was just something that poped in my head when I read some of the other questions and I was curious as to what the awnsers would be.
I consider myself an Apathetic Agnostic (http://www.uctaa.org/) another link I got via UF (http://www.userfriendly.org/static/)

Even an agnostic - nay, even an atheist - knows that those are “depictions.” By definition he is omniscient, omipotent, and omnipresent. Those characteristics are diAGNOSTIC of God.

yeah yeah, I think the one about John Glenn probably comes closest to the real awnser …

And it’s Apathetic Agnostic the difference might subtle but it is essential.

Thanks for the awnsers everyone, 't was fun.
