Where I pit DRM protected PDF Files (lame)

I’m starting classes on the 13th at South University’s online campus (I know how can a campus be online). One of the books that I need to use is issued as a PDF file with DRM. You are limited to installing the Ebook on one computer.

Thats right an electronic book is being restricted more than a physical book. I can understand restricting it to being installed on one computer at a time but I can’t even do that. I have to decide between putting it on my home computer or my laptop.

if I put it on my laptop I can read it anywhere except at home because I don’t have space for the laptop to be used.

If I put it on my home system then I can’t read the E-book on my lunch period at work when I’m allowed to use my laptop.

I just wanted to vent and am NOT looking for any way to get around the DRM to allow me to read the book on more than one computer.

Dam Kolledge educashun. Igot 1 end yoo see wear it got mi. It just not worf it.

Thank you for the chuckle.

Not that I’m advocating this, mind you, but there’s probably a hack for it that you could find via google. Since as well all know, DRM hurts the legitimate customers more than it hurts the pirates.

I do, sort of, feel your pain, however. I once bought a CD-ROM off of eBay that had a bunch of old manuals (that were in the public domain) on it that were in PDF format. The seller had password protected the files so you had to enter the password (which was printed on the CD) to view them. Now, there’s about 5 people on the planet who would want such a CD, me being one of them. WTF is the point of password protecting it? It’s not like there’s such a huge market for those things out there that I’d be able to cut in their business by selling knock offs. Considering what I paid for it, it’s doubtful that they would have recouped their costs of scanning the manuals.

Right I’m sure there is a hack I can find because I’m taking an IT related course  and if you don’t know how to find the solution to a problem you should not be in IT (just my opinion)

Hypothetical situation but

VMWARE Server is free for use
VMWARE Server runs on XP
There is an adobe reader for many flavors of linux
Linux does not require a licence for each computer while with Windows XP you need a licence for each virtual machine thus each VM is treated as a computer.

I think you can understand where I am going with this plan.

Not really. Are you saying that acrobat reader for linux doesn’t support Adobe’s own DRM?

No I’m hoping that acrobat reader supports adobe’s DRM. because that will allow me to access the PDF in the virtual machine.

I’ve had success in moving a Virtual Machine running 98 from a PC with 2003 Server 120 day trial on it to a PC running Linux. I’m going to hope I have the same success in moving the virtual linux system from one physical pc to another.

Technically the PDF will only be used on one computer and by using Linux I have no software licenses to worry about.

With vmware, you can have the same (virtual) computer in two different places.

Ah, I see. Good luck!

You’d be surprised how many IT folks don’t seem to know what they’re doing.
