Where in the world is there currently war/armed conflict?

Was just reading that Thailand and Cambodia have had recent clashes on their borders, and of course I’m keeping updated on the middle east. I know South Sudan has had problems but haven’t heard about that in a week or two, and there’s obviously Iraq/Afghanistan. But other than that, where else in the world is there currently armed conflict going on, and why is it happening there? Mostly territorial disputes I’m guessing?

Libya is a major omission from your list.

Northern Uganda, many parts of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo

The Ivory Coast was in a civil war up until two weeks ago. It’s officially over now that the renegade president has been arrested, but I doubt everything’s peachy keen just because the witch is dead.

Most organized fighting these days is not country vs. country but rather armed faction vs armed faction within a country. Or armed faction vs the current sitting government.

Both Yemen & Somalia are having what amounts to civil war.

All the Central American countries are having a low intensity war between their government and the drug traffickers.

There’s Chechnya in Russia, as well as the barely disguised intermittent battles in Nagorno-Karabakh and other ethnic enclaves in the Caucasus.

etc.

Wikipedia keeps a list of ongoing military conflicts, it’s on the front page, under “more current events” There’s also a topic page, and I’d assume people keep it updated – who’d want the world to*** not ***know about a conflict?

Note: it contains ongoing conflicts such as the Korean War, Arab-Israeli Conflict, and even the US War on Drugs. But still, a list you want, a list you get.

FLECis still active in Angola, although it is more of a regional conflict. When I worked in Cabinda, the compound was guarded by Cuba and Angolan soldiers. All our rooms in the accommodation blocks had a Kelvar blankets and we had evacuation drills twice a year. Fortunately for us, FLEC were pretty poor shots and most of the mortar shells were duds or way off target.

The War on Drugs it is not an international war, but a battle against organized crime.

The FARC and ELN guerillas continue to be active in Colombia, and take refuge at times in neighboring countries including Panama, Venezuela, and Ecuador. A remnant of the Shining Path is sporadically active in Peru.

India and Pakistan still argue over territory in Kashmir. Many places - Burma/Myanmar, Phillipines, Aceh in Indonesia, Sudan etc. there are still simmering rebellions. The communist guerillas occasionally make appearances in Columbia, and sometimes Ecuador and Peru IIRC. The Congo often seems to be embroiled in assorted guerilla conflicts.

With modern weaponry, two well-established industrial-level states would be hard-pressed to maintain a stale-mate for very long in an all-out war. The last that comes to mind was the Iran-Iraq conflict that drained both sides thanks to arms embargoes in the 1980’s.
