Dammit! You beat me to it.
Don’t know where the ship is now but my brother in law was a crewman on it back in the day. He passed on last month (covid). Mom painted him a painting of it :http://www.beckysart.com/beckysart/Leavinghome.html
It’s not just that - it is literally a glitch in The Matrix. And if you’re walking in front of it when Pork_Rind is looking, you might disappear. Permanently. Best to just stay clear.
FWIW, I see the fnord I mean the ship in all views, Safari and Firefox. And I see ships in LA harbor, too.
Now taking bribes requests to not look at things.
When I was a little kid in the '50s I went on the ship, on the occasion of my great aunt being on for a passage to Europe. Back then visitors could go on with passengers.
Too bad I didn’t think to stow away, but I couldn’t find any pickle barrels, a la the Marxes.
I went looking for it with an old browser, I did indeed see it there with Eyeball 1.2
Yes, its still in Philly. Mostly. Some of it was in the Windmill Point restaurant and USS Unites States Lounge in Nags Head, NC. I only found out today by Googling to make sure that I had the correct name, that the place was burned to the ground as part of a training exercise in 2011. According to the article:
“The ocean liner’s artifacts were eventually donated to the Mariners Museum and Christopher Newport University in Newport News.”
My great uncle was the purser on the ship. Unfortunately, he was long-retired I didn’t know what a purser was or had even heard of the USS United States when I knew him in the '60s.
Bump…
If anyone’s interested in where it is now, the ship has been sold and will soon become the world’s largest artificial reef in Florida. There are live webcams tracking the ship as it’s floated down the Delaware River today (Feb 19th).
The ship is pining for the fnords.
Here’s a gift link to today’s NYT article on the ultimate fate of the United States. Sad to see they couldn’t make it into a museum.

Someone posted a video snippet of it being moved from Philadelphia recently. Perhaps earlier today?
It was supposed to move in Nov. I took a trip to get some last above-the-water pics of it. Then it was delayed at the last minute.
It was supposed to move again two weeks ago. I was going to get up at stoopit early to travel there to watch it go down the river. Again delayed a day before it was set to go.
I couldn’t make it yesterday, so of course it moved. ![]()
I am a diver, I do plan on seeing it again, at some point after it starts it’s new life as a reef off of FL.
Right!?
That’s going to be a hell of a dive destination.
From what I read elsewhere, the ship’s smokestacks are so tall it had to be moved at low tide in order for it to fit under some of the bridges in the area.
Cool. I’ve been on that ship. My aunt was taking it from New York to Europe, and back in those days non-passengers were allowed on board to see their friends and family off. I remember she had a nice state room, but not a lot else.
