Where on Earth should I go on holiday?

Go on a first-class safari in either Botswana or Tanzania. Check out Wilderness Safaris for details.

Kyoto sounds like it has everything you would want.

It’s not too hot at this time of year, although maybe a little humid. IIRC it has the world’s highest concentration of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Mucho history and culture. The food is amazing! No beaches, it’s only hectic in the downtown area, and even then it’s not so bad. Not like Tokyo. If you truly hate hectic, I’d stay away from Tokyo. There are plenty of things to see in Japan that I would recommend above there, and many of these are closer to Kyoto anyway.

Also, we have lots of dopers on the board familiar with Japan who could help you plan your trip

Why limit yourself?

Argentina

things I like:

history - yep, although a lot of it isn’t very nice, the Indian stuff up north is interesting.
nice scenery - Iguazu Falls, Moreno glacier, seals pups getting munched by Orcas, interspersed by lots of grassland and flat stuff and cows and pump jacks. Some of the stuff in Salta may interest rock spotters. You can even catch a boat out to Antarctica (I think a doper has done that)
good food and wine - best cow in the world, and the wine is pretty fine.
new cultures - well its not Azeri or North American so I guess it will be new
moderate climates - Getting to winter right now, up north is still warm, down south cool, the wine growing regions are moderate, Buenos Aires is dry sunny but cool. Come in sumer and it is hot, although down south is pretty moderate
things I don’t care for
**
l
ying on a beach **- its winter, the beeches are not great and will be packed in Summer, best avoided.
organized activities - organization? That just something that happens in other countries
too much sun - got winter
loud noise (especially those kids on my lawn). Well Bs As is a busy city, but once out into the provinces things calm down (except the driving)
anything too hectic - Again , out of BS As things are pretty tranquil,do not expect things to happen quickly.
nothing too basic - plenty of nice places in Mendoza etc, and the dollar still goes along way here.

One of the drawback right now is a bunch of strikes and you have to use Areolineas Argentina (Austral is it’s other name) for internal flights. They could not express their contempt and dislike for their customers anymore clearly if they wrote ‘screw you and the plane you are flying on’ on every ticket.

things that aren’t a problem

time of year - well in summer downtown Bs As it is hot, but it is worth while just to sit on a street corner and watch the scenery jiggle by.

money  Dollar still goes a long way here.
