Where on Google Earth is Carmen Sandiego?

If you’re nostalgic for the early '90s, this reproduces the crude look of computer game graphics circa 1991. The actress Lynne Thigpen is dead, so they showed Chief as a glowing ghost à la Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Link?

Go to google.com/earth. There’s a button on the page.

I played yesterday, but only once. Do they have multiple levels?

I only played once also. I didn’t see any hint of other levels. It was so easy I could do it in my sleep in under 5 minutes. I took note of it more for the stylistics than the intellectual content. <– geography geek

Thanks; I was going to add a link, but it stuck a string of extra characters onto the URL as long as your arm, and I would have preferred to share just the simplest possible URL 'cause I don’t know what all the other stuff is for, probably generated specially for me.

This is not a reference to the children’s game show but a reference to the the Netflix cartoon (which was no doubt influenced by the game show).

In it, Carmen is a good guy working to take down the evil organization that raised her from an orphan. But the authorities don’t realize she’s on the same side (though, she is a vigilante).

I would have thought it’d be a reference to the 1980s computer game that inspired both the game show and the Netflix cartoon.

Cool–I might do this with my students. They’d not know most of the references, but it’d be a great opportunity to do some online research!

Huh, apparently Firefox doesn’t support Google Earth. That surprises me: Both Google and Firefox are generally standards-compliant enough that I wouldn’t have expected a problem.

Certainly the character designs are taken from the Netflix Cartoon.

at least it wasn’t that awful fox produced cartoon in the 90s …
since I only played the original games at school did you ever get to Carmen? like she was the last person to catch?

Was Chief always a glowing, hovering spirit? Or is that a 2019 adaptation? In reference to Lynne Thigpen’s death some years ago?

In the original game, yes, Carmen was always the last person to catch. With the result that you didn’t even bother looking for clues to the thief’s identity: you just went straight to Interpol on the last mission and put in her description to get a warrant, and then hopped on a plane as soon as you got a destination clue in each city.

It’s a 2019 adaptation. I haven’t finished the show but I’m pretty sure the Chief isn’t dead, she’s just in a secure location and communicates with her agents via hologram. Because technology and cool.

Today’s kids expect holograms.
