I just got a nice laptop PC from work, and am trying to decide how to deal with working off of several computers.
For example my work desktop computer is networked and I keep all my project data on a mapped network drive (there’s 200 GB of it so far). My home PCs are also networked and I keep all my home project data on mapped network drives (only about 20 GB of that). I move things back and forth peacemeal on a USB drive of some sort.
But maybe with a laptop I want to use some other strategy. I know there’s the Microsoft Briefcase, but it kind of assumes one master and one slave. There’s some other new program out, but with a limit of only 1 GB it’s not really useful here. I guess I can’t keep all files synched on all 3 computers because I don’t have 200 GB available on each machine. Maybe I want a periodic image of the laptop on one of the two networks?
What I am really looking for here is some website or information or discussion formus that deal with questions and problems like these. In fact I’m not sure what other questions I’ll come up with - like, what are typical software licensing options that let one user use software on multiple machines, and is there some precedent for this, or a special name for such use? Or, the problem I just failed to figure out for myself, how to configure the laptop to be able to move back and forth between two networks. Or how to keep it backed up (both my networks use automatic backup to remote buildings, but the laptop has no plan yet). How do you get serious about putting a laptop to good use?
People somewhere must be discussing this - where?
