So I dig me some comics. Even written some. Go me.
However, my LCS - which is a good one - is light on alternative comics and I have trouble finding info on such so I can have them order them for me.
Where do you all fine people go for such info?
It’s not that I don’t like superheroes. They’re fine in low doses. But there’s not a lot such will ever tell me that I don’t already know and haven’t heard a thousand times before.
Persepolis
American Splendor
Cerebus the Aardvark
Bandette
Whenever I do a search I just end up with a lot of sites wanking off to Vertigo titles. Those are fine but I’m hoping to find a place I can reliably find smaller, more personal stuff.
Have you seenthis? Almost 800 pages of (judging by Drawn & Quarterly’s past excellence) graphic goodness. I’m getting my copy Tuesday according to tracking.
What I’m hoping to find is a site that reviews independent and small press graphic novels on a regular basis. The Onion AV Club used to do it but not so much anymore.
I get a lot of my comics news and reviews from ComicsAlliance.com. They spend a lot of time on the big two, but make a point to also highlight small press and promising new talent.
Your local shop should be able to sell you a copy of Diamond Previews every month, which has probably listed most of the shop’s stock over time! It’s usually getting on for 800 pages long. If they don’t have copies for sale, they should at least let you check out thier shop copy. The current (June) issue is #321, with listings of August releases.
This is their online version
The Comics Journal is still around and their online version features news, reviews, editorial pieces, and interesting features on a wide variety of independent comics material, from the latest art-school stuff to super obscure Japanese manga from the 1950s.
Tom Spurgeon over at The Comics Reporter covers both mainstream Marvel/DC books and the indy scene and keeps a pretty good balance between the corporate and the personal.
