Where to get lower-priced hearing aids

My Mom’s doctor recommends that she resume using a hearing aid–years ago she stopped using the one she had, which failed, and it has run out of warranty. The doctor suggested I try Wal-Mart or other places to find one. I was just at Wal-Mart; they said they don’t sell hearing aids.
I live in Gardena, in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County. Do any other Dopers in this general area know of places to buy hearing aids that don’t really cost an arm and a leg, as the doctor suggested? Thanks very much.

Costco has a good reputation for low cost hearing aids.

For some people a personal sound amplifier is all they need:

You might see if there’s a Costco with a hearing center near you. I wear hearing aids, though I have not purchased any from Costco (yet). They have national brands, as well as their own brand. Most of them get pretty good reviews.

Mind you, hearing aids are ridiculously expensive to begin with.

They sell them at Walmart, they just can’t call them hearing aids. They sell them with a wink and a nod as hunting/game ears for “hearing game better.”
