See, I know someone’s gonna come in here and say “I found this with a quick google search” even though I’ve been googling my ass off for half-an-hour. But that’s okay because I have no pride.
While watching an MPT program I discovered that flying squirrels are native to my home state of Maryland and am dying to the see the cute little suckers in person. The program mentions tours that people can take to see them in thier natural environment but for the life of me I cannot find them being offered anywhere. Any Maryland natives have a clue?
The Southern Flying Squirrel is found all over the Easten U.S., as far south as Florida. They are rather common animals, though they are secretive and seldom seen. Your best bet, actually, is not to go out at night with a flashlight, but to look in the tree and stump hollows where they spend the day. They are much smaller than the familliar grey and red squirrels, and are easily spooked by lights at night. Incidentally, many exotic animal breeders have taken to the S.F.Squirrel and they are becoming popuar pets (though they may be illegal in your state; check with the USDA.)
