Where Troy Once Stood

So I’m reading the Cliver Cussler book, Trojan Odyssey, and he mentions that the real site of the Trojan War was not in Turkey, but rather was in England.

I found this a fanciful tail, but knowing that a lot of authors spend time in research before including topics in their work, I decide to do a quick Google search. Sure enough, this site makes the claim.

There is even a book written on the subject by Iman Jacob Wilkens. I was just curious if any of you had heard this story and if the book is worth tracking down to read, or is it just a fount of misinformation?

HAH. sorry, but this does not look legitimate at all.

Heh, I think it looks like a crock but here’s a section of the book for you to make your own judgment. I note, with absolutely no judgment whatsoever, that his very first piece of evidence that the Trojan War did not occur in Turkey is that Homer describes the see as being wine-dark rather than blue.

There’s a way out theory, with book, that the Odyessy and the Iliad fit Baltic geography better that Mediteranian geography and hence are Baltic myths transported to Greece (along with a whole lot of other random “facts”).

This kind of overlooks that Homer (whoever he/she/them was) probally had a pretty vague idea of the geography of the Med anyway.

I’ve read it; it’s an interesting theory but I didn’t think it held up to scrutiny.

Bear in mind those weren’t the only feet in ancient times some think trod on England’s Mountains Green.

I sailed from Bari to Patras many and many a year ago, which was an all-night cruise. When I stepped out onto the deck in the morning light I was stunned by the color of the water, which looked bluish purple to my eyes. I thought that “the wine dark sea” was a perfect description.
