Where Was This Picture Taken?

Bingo! If you squint, in the distance you can see snow in the Sierras almost 100 miles away.

I’ll offer a few of my pictures:

(All taken in large cities, on four different continents.)

Four reasonable ones…

…and one that’s probably impossible.

That’s Circular Quay in Sydney.

13’s an overhead of Chicago, USA, looking south from just north of Belmont Harbor.

14 looks like London, with the red double-decker buses everywhere.

16’s somewhere where they write in Cyrillic. If I could read Cyrillic, that would help… I’ll guess Kiev.

If I had to guess, I’d say looking out a left side window on approach to 27L at O’Hare.

Looks like where Euston Rd meets Tottenham Court Rd. It must be from quite some time ago as Euston Tower was completed in 1970, and it seems that block in the bottom right is entirely different now.

Yes and yes.

Yes, it was taken in 1969.

No, there would not be any Cyrillic in the picture, so it’s not in Russia or the Ukraine.

Mt. Popa in Myanmar. I considered visiting but I was too cheap to get a taxi from Bagan.

That first one looks like the Hamman in Istanbul.

This could be any number of Chinese cities, probably in the 1990’s.

It is at Chichen Itza. I was recently there.

I was going to guess Shanghai, though I don’t have strong evidence for it.

Yes, 1996 to be precise. It’s also about 10 km north of the city centre, taken from my room in the hotel where I stayed.

No, not Shanghai.

Beijing? 10 km north of Tiananmen would place it near where the Olympic Park is today.

Nanjing Pearl Spring Scenic Area!

Okay, not so impossible obviously.

Yes, the other picture was Chichen Itza.

Aha! It’s from the Crowne Plaza Hotel, near where the Birds Nest is now.

Hong Kong Cemetery. Wikipedia has a very similar picture:

I was going to say Kapalua.

Angkor Wat?
