Where Was This Picture Taken?

Yup, Sossusvlei in particular, site of that awful jLo flick *The Cell.

I splurged for the cab, and it was completely worth it, although the monkeys and third world staircases were pretty scary.

That’s it. I walked up to the Peak then along the ridge and down into Happy Valley, where this cemetery is located.

Very close.

Ta Prohm. Part of the Angkor complex.

try picture 30.

(if I have the numbering right!)

The last one looks like Chuquicamata copper mine in Chile.

22 looks like SE Asia, obviously, and somewhere with French-influenced architecture. Indochina - Laos maybe?

28 looks like a Thai temple, somewhere in the north?

This is the only one I’ve known so far (and was too slow on), the Observatory at Chichen Itza.

That’s not it; I’ve never been to South America. It was one of the stops on a coach tour my wife and I took.

I think 22 is Yangon, Myanmar.

I don’t actually remember that building, but it’s deteriorating condition made me think of Myanmar. I eliminated Laos because Vietienne is a major shithole and I don’t recall any decent looking colonial architecture.

I eliminated Vietnam because I have a huge fascination with bicycles and the typical pedicabs in Vietnam have two front wheels with a seat between them. I’m pretty sure I have a picture somewhere of a Myanmaran (sp?) bicycle.

Plus, the cars in the picture are right hand drive and most of the cars in Myanmar are imported from Japan (right hand drive) even though they drive on the right, which is completely fucked up and classically Myanmar.

I’m guessing Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah.

That’s a good guess!

You are correct.

Not in Laos. I spent a month in Laos but none of these photos are from there.

28 is in Thailand, but not in the north.

Yes! This is in Yangon / Rangoon, Myanmar. I had just crossed back over the river on the ferry after a day trip to Twante. I was staying nearby so there was no need for a pedicab.

I wouldn’t describe Vientiane as harshly as you have but it is one of the most boring cities ever.

I have a few.

Couple of famous historic sites in there.

F/836 is West Point.

My detective skills* have pointed me to the Palacio Salvo, in Montevideo, Uruguay.

*I Googled flags of the world

Edit - I’d missed 38 being identified above, and hadn’t spotted the flag! Wrong continent - but it was designed by a European

Good calls, but 36 isn’t near Africa.

Palacio Salvo is known for having been the tallest building in South America for decades.

That does not look Thai at all. Looks Chinese, and that’s the Chinese goddess Kwan Yin (various spellings).

Edit: Showed it to the wife. She agrees this is Chinese style but in Thailand. Not uncommon to copy Chinese style for some temples. She thinks she’s even seen it in person but can’t remember where.

I’ve been to Thailand but not China (unless you count Beijing airport!) and it looked Thai to me, especially the figures on the roof. But I defer to your local knowledge and put it down to a lucky guess!

The figurines on the roof and the lack of both nagas and spires peg it as Chinese. As does the shape of the roofs themselves, that’s very Chinese. (Not to mention the giant Chinese goddess, which you would not see at your average Thai temple.) Also note the wide staircase in front of that one building with what will be a frieze in the middle, exactly as they appear throughout the Forbidden City in Beijing; again, very Chinese. Thai temples do feature the orange roof color though, and while there are fully Chinese temples here with their riot of colors, there are also many Chinese-Thai hybrids such as this one.

For example, this Chinese-Thai temple seen from our balcony and which I’m looking at right now as I sit here and type. The monks at this one don’t even wear the saffron robes but rather saffron-colored Chinese “pajamas.”

I’d put some photos out for this game too, but it seems like everything I have online is labeled. I’ll have to try to find something new.
