Guess the City

It’s been suggested in another thread that we post pictures of cities, and invite others to guess which city. Note that if yoiu do this, you need to have no data in the URL of the picture that gives a clue.

So, to start it off:

City 1

That’s a pretty small city.

Well, it’s actually the city hall (or the equivalent in another language).

Another picture of City 1

I think it’s Ottawa

Definitely not Ottawa. The flags seem like they should be a clue, but they appear to be different from one picture to the other. In the first picture they almost looked like Polish flags (with something added), while in the second one there’s something that reminds me of a British flag.

I’ve not seen Ottawa, but that’s a good guess – but not right.

Yes, the flags don’t give you a clue at all, as far as I can see.

It seems it should be a relatively small city, based on the size of the city hall. And the line of extremely close buildings in the second picture makes me think it could be somewhere in Europe.

This is what I see–the eagle version of the Polish flag in the first picture, and a UK flag added to it in the second.

Wherever it is, I’m guessing it’s not the UK or anywhere else where they drive on the left side of the road. The stoplight in the second photo seems installed for right-side traffic.

I’m going to take a wild guess and say it’s Bern, Switzerland.

It looks to me like the flag in the first picture is the same as the flag on the right in the second picture.

ETA: are we allowed to use google?

Good observation.

Here we have two buildings that could be called the “city hall” of Bern, and none of them look like the first picture, so no.

I think you’re right. One of them is presumably the city flag, and the second one the national or regional flag.

Not to speak for the OP, but I guess so. I’ve been looking for possible cities on Wikipedia, for one. I guess an image recognition search engine would be cheating, though.

I dunno. The architecture seems vaguely Austrian/Central European to me. I want to guess Salzburg, but I don’t recognize either building as being from there.

Well, this is harder than I thought it would be. A third view of City 1, taken by me just 5 minutes earlier than the picture in post #4. (I took all the pictures the same day, and walked between locations).

I think even in Austria the architecture looks a bit more exotic than that. I’m thinking western continental Europe. France, Benelux, Germany, Switzerland. And most sizeable German towns had their old buildings destroyed in the war, so maybe not Germany.

It looks Northern European to me, but googling yielded nothing.

Yeah, my other train of thought had me going around the Baltic Sea, but with no luck.

OK, one more clue, then I’m leaving this thread for a few hours: the city does look European, but it’s not in Europe.

Something in Quebec perhaps?
