Guess the City

Hm. I’m interested in the crosses on both the church next to the city hall and on the palace thingie. The churchtower looks vaguely Orthodox, but that doesn’t fit, as I’m convinced that this is a British territory in some way.

From the third photo, I can tell it’s on a body of water and they likely ship a lot of grain out of there.

Is it in Canada and on one of the Great Lakes?

Wait a minute. Is it somewhere in South America? Is it a place with a large population of German immigrants like in Argentina (which would explain the grain elevators)?

Doubt it; it doesn’t look familiar to me. Right now something (mainly the third picture) tells me it could be in the Caribbean.

I got it. Quebec City.

ETA: Proof.

I could swear I looked up Quebec City city hall pictures earlier in the day when this thread first started, but apparently I must not have.

Huh, guess you’re right. I’m trying to figure out what that building in the second picture is after all, as well as to find a picture of Quebec’s port that is similar to the third one.

ETA: here is, incidentally, another view of Quebec City’s city hall where the flags are more visible. I think they are banners celebrating the 400th anniversary of the city.

OK, let me keep this game going. This one should have some clues to get you started:

Where is this?

My first guess is somewhere in Central Asia. I looked up Samarkand and can’t find the buildings in question, but the architecture is quite similar.

I think I put in too many clues for a first picture there. (I mean, it’s pretty obvious what general part of the world it is.) But it’s not Samarkand.

Khiva?

Yep. I knew after your last post you were going to get it on your next post. I have some tough ones I can pull out, but will wait for other contributions first.

And the building in the backdrop of this picture is the Camille-Roy Building of the Séminaire de Québec.

I have to make it up for not having recognized Quebec City! :smack: :stuck_out_tongue:

I may try it, if I find a safe place to upload pictures. Not today though.

Can’t believe you missed this one! I just noticed this thread and came in to post Quebec, because I recognised the Séminaire (as a Laval graduate, I remember reading that it served as one of the original buildings for the Université, prior to the move to Ste. Foy.)

Yes, pulykamell was the first to get it right.

I’ll throw one out there… guess the city.

:dubious:

BTW, I totally looked at the City Hall of Quebec City while searching for #1 up there. But the pictures I found looked pretty different from that one.

Well, I don’t (or rather didn’t) know what the Séminaire looks like. And I don’t think I’ve ever seen Quebec’s city hall from the front. I still can’t make out what the buildings are in that picture of the port. I would definitely have recognized an obvious feature of Quebec City such as the Château Frontenac or the Parliament buildings, but that would have made the game much too easy.

I’d say that’s somewhere in Turkey, but there’s no really recognizable building in there and we may not be able to match it with a city even if we guess correctly. Is that what you mean?

The people are a little bit white for Turkey and the text wouldn’t be in the latin alphabet. It’s a toughie. A couple clues I see. The domed building, domed shrine thingee, and the spire on top of the shrine look Islamic influenced. Given the use of the Latin alphabet, the appearance of the people, and the Islamic influence buildings I would guess the country is Romania. I’ll go with the biggest city and say it’s Bucharest, but brief googling doesn’t bring up anything to confirm.

Sarajevo?
