Guess the City

Turkey uses an alphabet based on the Latin alphabet. It was one of Ataturk’s major cultural reforms: Turkish Alphabet. For example, here’s the web-site of the Turkish Embassy in Washington

Looks like I was right – here’s someone’s picture of it on flickr.

Congratulations, that’s pretty good. With that minaret and that “Döner kebap” sign in the lower right corner, it was likely to be in a European Muslim country, but I didn’t think of Bosnia.

Well, I can’t claim any special effort here. It happens I’ve been to Sarajevo, and Sarajevo came straight to mind when I saw the picture.

Now… I wish I had a picture to offer myself. The one I came up with I think is too hard.

Eh post it anyways. I think mine might be a little tough, but there’s a lot of clues that point you to the general area. Probably have to have gone there to get it though.

Kathmandu?

Nope, and does anyone know of a place where I can post a higher resolution picture?

There are a couple clues that would be easier to see that would make Kathmandu less likely and another place much more likely.

Lhasa?

Colophon, was the linked image in your post always to Sarajevo? Because when I clicked on it the first time, it went to a gif of a little boy dancing. I assumed you had posted the wrong link, which is why I left the dubious face smiley. If I had seen the image it goes to now, I would have known immediately that it was Sarajevo - I was there in 2007.

Nope, but the building in the picture is said to be modeled after a building in Lhasa.

Here’s a bit higher resolution photo.

That’s my second guess. Doesnt quite look like Kathmandu, but the prayer flags made me think of that. Thought maybe it was just a different angle or corner of the city.

Here it in it’s full resolution glory: link.

That makes me think it’s maybe Dharamsala?

The hills/mountains make me think of Cuzco but I don’t think it is for some reason.

Well, there are prayer flags in the top of the picture and I can see two mosques. But no churches. So mountains aside, it doesn’t really strike me as Peruvian.

Obviously it is a place where there are both Muslims and Buddhists. I don’t see anything that’s obviously a Hindu temple, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any, cause of the trees.

Yes - I was hoping there would be enough clues there without making it blindingly obvious. Of course it helps if you’ve been there!

Yes - I have no idea what pic you saw! Maybe Tinypic was having a database brainfart?

Ok, so I will give some clues and then spoiler box the answer. I thought it would be tough simply because this isn’t a well known city.

(1) The religion thing is important. As far as I am aware, this is the only place where you have Tibetan Buddhism+Islam without any significant Hindu influence.

(2) It’s a small city, IIRC 10-20k.

(3) Dharmasala is the closest of the cities mentioned so far. Flying in a plane, it is probably an hour or so away, but it takes 24-30 hours driving to go from Dharmasala to this city.

Answer:

Leh, India

Many Germany central cities were built “as good as old”, so you can’t rule out Germany or Austria. Still I have no clue. The enormous grain elevators fronting the water would make me think of a North American city fronting either the Mississippi River or a Great Lake.

Almost: those grain elevators are on the St Lawrence River, which is the outlet of the Great Lakes.

Okay, here’s a new one. I did not take this picture because when I went through my own pictures, it seemed like every one had something easily googleable in it.
