When he wanted to get away, Bush would head to his ranch. Does Obama have a retreat someplace? I’m sure he’s going to need one.
Don’t know. But when he has time, he should go home to Hawaii from time to time. Chicago is wonderful, but…
He could always use Camp David if he doesn’t have a place of his own. It was good enough for FDR…
The Obamas don’t actually own a place in Hawaii; they just rent a vacation house. If the Obamas end up going someplace as often as the Bushs went to Crawford the SS is probally going to want more security than they can get from a rental. Not to mention all office and comunication requirements the President has. Presidents never really have any time off from work. A Presidential vacation means he works from a different location and doesn’t do much public events.

Clinton didn’t own a house so he would stay at places in desirable spots that were owned by friends. I don’t know if security preparations were more economical for doing an occasional visit or permanently securing a second (or third) home.
If recent history is any indication, Obama will probably find a place to stay in Hawaii. Carter said that the perk he missed most from being President was the use of Camp David so that place can’t be too bad as a retreat.
The vacation house is owned by a guy who lives in Portland, Oregon. Michelle’s brother is the men’s basketball coach at Oregon State University in Corvallis.
My WAG is the Obamas will spend some time in the Pacific Northwest.
I can imagine that the Navy has some swanky digs for their flag officers in Pearl Harbor, should’nt be too hard to borrow a pad.

I think the Hale Koa Hotel on Waikiki (for military personnel only) would be a much nicer spot for Navy flag officers, military folks in general, AND the Obamas. Pearl is a rat-hole as far as I’m concerned.
Still, I doubt Obama would vacation there. I think he’d like something with a bit more privacy.
