Where do you get that brand of meat subsitute?
And I don’t think I’ll ever go totally veggie. I love meat too much. My cats know they are safe.

I’ve tried the Morningstar Farms crumbles, and as much as I like most of their products, these had a too regular, extruded texture. (“Oh, look, rat turds,” was my husband’s response.) I would also suggest chopping up a Boca Burger or something similar.
If you want to crumble block tofu, freeze it first. Freezing changes the texture, making it impossible to slice but easy to crumble.
The first time I had a veggie burger at Houstons, I nearly sent it back because I thought it was meat. It’s so tasty, and the texture/look is very meatlike. I’m a big fan of them.
Send me one, would you Montfort?
Come to Washington, Michi, and I’ll buy you dinner there.
Well, it might be a while since I just used up all my vacation time…but I might take you up on the offer one of these days…any chance to meet a new Doper.
Okay, sounds good. I’m scheduled to visit my folks down in FLL this winter, probably in January. I know Tampa’s not near Ft. Lauderdale, but there is a Houstons in Ft. Lauderdale…
Lauderdale is only about 3 1/2 hours away from Tampa!
Montfort and Cyndar, if I am not intruding…
There is a Houston’s in Winter Park, north of Orlando.
Dinner? My treat?
Screech, we will certainly have to set aside some time for that!

Cyndar - please re-mail me (off-board) your mailing info so I can overnight my contribution to Tuesday’s Dopefest. (I left the printout at home.) USPS does do Sunday express mail deliveries, so it should arrive at your work if I send it tomorrow (or send it now and I can have it in this afternoon’s mailing, arriving tomorrow).

Well, when you’re in DC to go OUT to dinner with Montfort, Michi, you simply MUST come IN to our house for a homecook vegetarian feast.
I want to re-iterate, most beef–in fact most meat–substitutes are meant to provide protein, texture and unique flavor–you won’t find an exact match for the meat your substituting (anymore than strawberry flavored candy is going to taste exactly like a fresh strawberry), but you will almost always find fewer calories, less fat and cholestrol, more protein per serving and, of course, for me a more humanely produced food.
AudreyK, <blush> thanks for posting my addy.
Peta, that is a lovely website you have there. And if I ever should find myself in the area, I will knock on your door for sure!
Screech, check your mail.
Since we’re discussing fake meat (or were, anyway), does anyone know what brand of fake burger has a heart-shaped patty?
A wonderful restaurant in Vancouver had heart-shaped patties in their veggie burgers, and they look, taste, and feel just like real beef. They’re moist, too. I’d love to find them retail.
Boca’s are good, too, though.
My choice for most meat like non-meat would be Gimme Lean, the ground sausage type stuff. I’ll be damned if that stuff doesn’t taste like wonderful, savory sausage. (My favorite meat was sausage before I was veg.) I can cook up a batch of it and just eat it right out of a bowl. Gimme Lean also makes a ground beef analog, but I’ve never had it, so I can’t comment on it, but if it’s anywhere near as good as the sausage… mmm boy.
Generally, however, even though I am a vegetarian, I don’t go for the meat imitations and other vegetarian convenience foods. Most aren’t too great, and they are usually really expensive.
