I looked up mumbly peg on google which I should have done before but oh well. It was not the games I am describing. For the link provided it looks must safer than the games I remember playing as a lad. But it is still boys screwing around with knives. I know that would have got a corner torn off my tote 'n chip certificate in boy scouts.
As grienspace sez, it the insurance companies, and lawyers and in general anyone not wanting kids to have fun.
I played mumbley peg, marbles, teeter-totter (we even had songs ‘teeter-totter, bread and water, wash you face in muddy water’), football in the street, baseball in the street, riding a bike without using handlebars, sliding down hills on our asses, etc. etc.
Everyones so afraid of being sued these days that you either have to wear all kinds of protective gear or you just don’t play.
It kinda bugs me the way my grandkids have to put on 10 pounds of protective gear just to ride a bike. And it’s the friggin law in this state.
Concerning the lack of seesaws at playgrounds; am I the only one who finds it ironic that the yellow traffic signs used to indicate a playground use as its icon (at least here in NY) a pair of kids on a seesaw?
