Although this is the Pit, there’s actually a good theoretical reason and just about every government uses it. Although childless couples and singles are not bad to have around, they don’t directly contribute to the future welfare of a nation. They may help economically, but they fundamentally not (or at least not yet) reproducing and ensuring the people as a whole survives. They are fundamentally axtraneous to the nation as a whole, since their contributions are financial.
Some people agree with this line of reasoning, some don’t. Your Mileage May Vary. But just about every nation uses it sometime.
I can’t buy that line at all - a single person can conribute to the future welfare of a nation even not by reproducing. They may do so by service (military) or even through scientific or intellectual pursuits.
The government’s plan to censor things at an ISP level will actually slow down our connectivity, effectively speed-limiting everyone.
Here is a link with more information. I know the guy they’re interviewing and while he’s never endeared himself to me personally, his knowledge and integrity aren’t in any doubt.
True, but money sent to them would be unlikely to in any way help the children grow up big an’ strong. Of course, I doubt this particular handout will, either.
We’re also getting free money to stimulate the economy in Japan.
About Aus$150 dollars each  What the fuck am I supposed to do with that?
The sad part is that it’s going to cost more for the public servants to administer the handout, than the handout itself. So… they’re taxing us more than they’re giving? Great plan.
My working husband my good working self have a dependent 13 year old son and we don’t get a cent, and the Family Tax Benefit A that I used to receive was stopped the moment that then boyfriend now husband moved in with me because I immediately declared his income. His overtime is generous, but without it, we’d be getting Uncle Kev’s free money too. I don’t understand why working people didn’t get a partial tax cut for the pay before Christmas - that’d have a better effect surely?
Don’t you know that all those single and childless couples got their tax cut earlier this year. There’s your handout. [I think mine equated to maybe 20 bucks a month:( ]
I was having a rant about this to my wife the other day. Don’t mind me, I’ve been slogging my guys out at work for the last 15 years paying my taxes, but I’ll be fine. Just because we have no kids doens’t mean we need money.
This may be a stereotype, but its the Pit so I can, but how much of these handouts are going to wind up in the pokies?? The government gets a cut back of the handouts anyway!

Some venues in Melbourne are reporting a 50% increase in takings over teh past 4 days (Herald Sun site). It’s okay to be a cynic - I used to work in a Taberet and it’s very depressing to see people put their tax returns and pensions through the machines.
What does everyone think of the latest proposed stimulus money?
$950 for people earning under $80,000
$650 for people earning $80,000-90,000
$300 for people earning $90,000-100,000
If we’re borrowing from the future to pay for this, are we getting the most bang for our buck by giving money to people earning $100,000? I think it was Turnbull who proposed bringing forward next year’s tax-cuts instead, an idea that I prefer to a stimulus package.
Did the last stimulus have any effect on the economy? Is this one likely to?
Economic tricks like this just confuse and mystify me.
If they need to encourage people to spend, telling them that we’re all in a horrible economic state and we’re running out of money isn’t the best way to handle things. Nobody’s spending because they’re all worried about what they’re being told. If they had just kept silent things would probably have worked out better.
