Ever since I discovered Doctor Who at the beginning of the year, I’ve also discovered that I quite like David Tennant. I’ve been watching some of his other work where I can, but some of his stuff (like the “Blackpool” series, and “Broadchurch,” if I don’t want to wait till August) is only available on UK-format DVDs.
I’ve poked around on the web a bit, but it all seems very confusing–like you have to change settings, and things might not work, and it generally doesn’t sound easy to deal with.
I’m reasonably technologically savvy (I can set up a simple stereo system, and have been able to program every VCR I’ve ever owned) so I feel confident I could follow instructions if they were clearly spelled out.
Anybody here have such a thing, or any recommendations on what to get and what to avoid?
Thanks!
I bought a Philips Region 1 DVD player and then used a simple series of button presses on the remote control to change it into a region-free one. The player was about fifty bucks from Target and the region-free hack was at this website.
Here, for instance, is the process to make a Philips DVP 5990 region-free:
- Press Setup
- Select the Preference Tab
- Press 1,3,8,9,3,1
- Press up/down key to select “0”
- Hit menu to exit.
Thanks for the link to the site, I’m the ‘go to’ guy for my friends tech problems and I love impressing them with tricks like this!
I bought mine on Amazon.
I think it was about the same price as the single region ones.
That’s exactly what we did, as well, when DVDs of Farscape weren’t being issued in Region 1 format. It’s a no-frills player (and it’s a number of years old now), but it works.
Thanks for the ideas! It actually does look like Amazon might have something that would work for me. For $50 or so I can give it a try, anyway.
