In the comic strip, “Beetle Bailey” there are a bunch of privates, a corporal, a sergant, two lieutenants, a major, and a general. Why is there no colonel?
There’s a captain too. And isn’t the shrink a colonel? Not sure, our paper doesn’t carry BB anymore.
He’s busy selling chicken.
You may as well ask why there is no lieutenant colonel either.
There are three overweight guys that aren’t seen as much. One is balding, one has a black mustache, and one has curly blond hair (but I think he’s just Halftrack’s chauffeur).
BTW:, Camp Swampy has an awful number of obese personnel. In addition to the three above there are Sargent Snorkel, Cookie, the female sargent, and Plato (the poet/philosopher guy). Maybe more I can’t think of at the moment. I can’t picture any of these guys lasting a day in the bush.
Camp Swampy has a colonel; Col. Scabbard (sp?). He’s the balding overweight officer Lumpy refered to. Col Scabbard is a sensible, intelligent, and capable officer. Mort Walker has said he created this character because he figured someone had to be keeping everything running at Camp Swampy. However in a daily humor strip there is little room for a serious character and Scabbard rarely appears in the strip.
It appears that the colonel was in the strip that ran on November 25. Go here to see it:

In the comic strip linked to in the previous post, I think the rank on the other officer’s uniform is a major. The rank of Colonel is a silver eagle not a golden maple leaf. The golden maple leaf is the rank of a major.
Let’s compromise and call him what he really is, a Lieutenant Colonel.
True the color of his insignia is yellowish, but it’s the same shade as the general’s. After looking over several of the strips, I find that they color uniform parts that should be silver or white as pale yellow, with a deeper yellow for gold.
Thats CAPTAIN Scabbard. He always wears a helmet. So does Lt. Fuzz.

Given the current times and mores, anyone think it’s odd that one of the main running gags in Beetle Bailey is having the poor schmuck get beaten regularly by Sarge? Now, I’m not saying our poor children must be protected from any and all examples of such savagery, but the recurrent theme seems to me to be in bad taste, and even worse, not very funny.
