Where's the love for liverwurst?

Eh…probably not the most nutritious food out there but I’m of the opinion there’s no such thing as “bad for you” food, just bad diets - so a thin slice or two a few times a week in an otherwise good diet isn’t so bad! My theory (and I’m sticking to it) is: pair fatty/calorie dense foods with something very high in fiber. You still get the happy tastieness, but the fiber helps slide the “bad” food out of your system before the calories have a chance to stick to your squishy bits.

Whoever suggested sweet relish with liverwurst - thanks, I’m going to try that. I’ve been using wasabi mustard to cut the fatty, rich taste, that was pretty yummy.

Add me to the list of people who do enjoy it, but ration it.

I like my sandwiches on rye (good, seeded rye that is hard to come by here which adds to the space between indulgences), with spicy mustard and a slice of onion.

I like liverwurst and braunschweiger, probably because my grandfather ate it.

'Nother liver lover here. A favorite is liverwurst or braunschweiger on rye with a thick slice of onion, sharp cheddar and mayo. Usually only have it when I’m alone, however.

Not sure I’ve ever had it, but I love braunschweiger.

I’ve been known to eat Brandt’s liver sausage from time to time (on crackers with mustard). But it doesn’t have a very strong liver flavour, IMO.

Because liverwurst (and braunsweiger) don’t have enough fat in them, my grandfather used to make us sandwiches on soft white bread, with about a 1/4" slice of liverwurst (or braunsweiger, whichever he had at the time) with an equally thick layer of butter. Man was it good. These days I just thinly butter the bread.

When you go to the delicatessen store,
don’t buy the liverwurst.
don’t buy the liverwurst.
Oh buy the corned beef if you must,
The pickled herring you can trust,
And the lox puts you in orbit AOK.
But that big hunk of liverwurst
Has been there since October First,
And today is the Twenty-Third of May.
So when you go to the delicatessen store,
don’t buy the liverwurst…

OMG You just took me back to summer camp something fierce.

Our lyrics were slightly different:
…Oh buy the corned beef if you must,
The pickles you can trust,
the ham on rye is AOK.
But don’t you buy that liverwurst
It’s been there since October First,

When I was a kid, the rare times my grandparents would stay with us, my grandma would make us liverwurst sandwiches at 3:30 in the afternoon for dinner. I liked it well enough but that was the only time I ever ate it since my parents never bought it. But I recently discovered a butcher shop near my workplace that sells store-made liverwurst. Yum!

Except last time I was there, all they had was braunschweiger. Maybe I’ll try it and see if it’ll work as a substitute.

InsomniaMama and Hello Again would you like that liverwurst with a side order of Dean Martin and Vic Damone?

CMC fnord!

Liverwurst, braunschweiger, livercheese—always have some in the fridge. Yum! With mustard on pumpernickel, or on fluffy white bread with mayo. Awesome stuff.

This is my story too. I found out that I was eating a *****wurst sandwich abound half way through, and thought “I’m eating WHAT?”. It was all I could do to choke down the rest of it. I wouldn’t say it was delicious, but it was tasty enough. It’s a psychological thing with me not being able to eat organ meat.

In the same way, I wouldn’t be able to eat hotdogs if they were called “compressed pig snout/ear/hoof/slaughterhouse floor sweepings sausages”'.

I am here: Google Maps

I grew up with liverwurst/braunchwauger as a road-trip food. Almonds and liverwurst. I think the salt keeps you from needing to stop so often?
It was one of the few things that stayed down in my first trimester nausea-fest. Om nom nom.
If it’s on a sandwich, I want wonderbread/mayo.
I also think of it as a toddler food, all that saturated fat and cholesterol is good for them.

I love it, but what is the difference between, liver sausage, liverwurst and Braunsweiger?

I love it but hate the fact it’s mostly fat. Then again, I LOVE spam too. I tried some lower fat liverwust but it is not nearly as good, so why bother, if you can’t have the REAL thing right?

Liverwurst and braunsweiger are both liver sausages, but not all liver sausages are liverwurst or braunsweiger.

Braunsweiger is smoked, liverwurst is not.

  1. At least under German labeling law, liverwurst is not primarily or only made out of liver, but from pigs meatn and fat, sometimes also from cow meat and fat.
  1. I’m vegetarian now, but occasionally I get a yearning for liverwurst with mustard. The reformhaus has very good soy substitute liverwurst.

Mmmm… Liverwurst. Or Braunschweiger. With regular French’s muatard and a slice of cheddar. Maybe a sliver of tomato and onion. On a nice Kaiser roll.

Damn, I’m hungry!

ZOMBIE LIVERWURST THREAD!!!
Love the stuff, even though it smells and resembles canned catfood. Got some Boars Head brand light liverwurst from the deli today. Had three slices of it straight up already. Was supposed to be for sandwiches but I don’t think it’s gonna make it. Hehe

No one else in my family likes it other than my mom, dad, and 2 yr old baby girl. And since I don’t live anywhere near mom or dad, that means more for me and the baby!! Yay!

ALDI occasionally gets in some really excellent liverwurst.

The best way to eat liverwurst is in the Conqueror sandwich at Cap’n Nemos in Roger’s Park in Chicago. From their menu:

Liverwurst, Muenster Cheese, Salami, Eggs, Sauerkraut Dressing, Captain’s Secret Sauce, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion.

It’s served on nice crusty bread and is a truly wonderful sandwich. Definitely on my Top Five Sandwiches along with the Triple BLT with extra bacon plus a fried egg at The Peanut in Kansas City and the Meatball Grinder at Marios in Kansas City.
