Which American accent do you have?

Western. My best friend is from Wisconsin, so at least I have learned to understand people who talk like that.

Western. I do not live in the western.

I was born in Iowa and grew up in NYS. And just yesterday a guy from NYC was busting on my Boston accent. At least he adopted me as his honorary goomba.

Absolutely. That’s what I got too.

Heh. That’s exactly what I thought.

My result showed Northern as well, not surprising since I live in the northland.

It says I’m Northern. Lived in Texas since I was 4 but folks are from PA and NJ. I use Texas expressions such as Y’all and fixin’ta but pronounce a lot of individual words as they do up North not like many down here.

Northern.

“That could either be the Chicago/Detroit/Cleveland/Buffalo accent”

This fits since I’m from the Buffalo area.

Northeastern. I’ve lost most of my original Bronx accent (except it reappears when I go back to NY), but I guess it still shows up in the vowels.

Not too surprising, since some of the features of the Northeastern accent are due to the influence of Irish immigrants in that region.

Northeastern, which makes sense. I’ve lived in New York City all my life, but I’ve always been told that I don’t have a New York (“Noo Yawk”) accent, so the Northeast region fits me just fine.

As per the site:

“Northern
You have a Northern accent. That could either be the Chicago/Detroit/Cleveland/Buffalo accent (easily recognizable) or the Western New England accent that news networks go for.”

Not bad, considering I was born about 80 miles southwest of Chicago.

Neutral, which appears to be their version of Midland.

Neutral, so obviously the maker of this quiz has no ear for Southern accents!

(Grew up in Georgia with parents who were natives of Tennessee)

Mid-Atlantic. Seeing as that I was born, raised, and still reside in Philadelphia, that would be accurate

Ditto, Labdad.

Now, to be fair many Southerners get all up in my shit because my mom is from Pittsburgh and they say I can’t be from around here. These are people who have never heard me drunk.

Neutral. Which is surprising because I’ve never lived in the area where this accent supposedly predominates. Maybe it’s a result of having lived in several different areas and my accent has just sort of settled in a neutral middle.

Northern. Born and raised in South Carolina…

Neutral. Which doesn’t surprise me, being a 4th (I believe) generation Californian…by the time folks made it here to the edge of the world I think all the accents had pretty much merged into non-existence…

Northeastern, right on the money.

Western here; I’m from Oregon so this makes sense. It says that Western is basically neutral but not quite. It told me if I want to learn to sound more neutral I should learn to pronounce stock and stalk differently (which is fantastic because I know how stock is supposed to actually be pronounced but I just don’t have that vowel sound available to me unless I really really try).

There are three questions conspicuously absent from that quiz.

How many syllables in “You all”?

How many syllables in “Four”?

How many syllables in “Nine”?

Neutral, but I think it’s because I speak with a combo of a Syracuse, NY accent (born, lived there until I was 12) and an Atlanta accent (lived here ever since). It also depends on who I’m talking to because I have a strong tendency to mirror other’s speech patterns. I have an extremely rednecky “customer service” accent, too.
