Which came first, big number notation with commas or fullstops?

In the US, a thousand is written 1,000
Other places (just Europe?) it is written 1.000

Which came first? What did King George and George Washington use? Did it already differ at that time?

AFAIK the convention using a comma to separate “thousands”, and a full stop to mark the decimal point is common to most English speaking countries.

It is interesting that both systems seem to be associated with
John Napier, this cite credits “A History of Mathematics” by Carl B. Boyer as the source.

In 1616, the notation we use today first appeared in a book called “Descriptio” by John Napier (Scotland) using a decimal point to separate the whole number part from the decimal number part. The next year he proposed using a comma instead to separate the two parts. Even today, most parts of the world use the comma.
